Any updates on who the team(s) to beat is in Northern Kentucky this year in girls High School Soccer? Is it St. Henry and Highlands again? Who are the players to watch this fall? Any new faces?

Top three this season.

Notre Dame

St. Henry

Brossart

Hmmm, seems the coaches disagree

The coaches can't be too familiar with NKY girls soccer if they have Highlands ahead of St. Henry and Notre Dame. Highlands graduated their entire starting lineup except one player. St. Henry and Notre Dame return virtually every starter. These polls are sometimes comical. Time will tell .

#10 Anderson County 2-0 over #5 Highlands in the Bluegrass Games tells you what a pre-season coaches poll is worth.

You know better than to base a teams strength on a preseason tourney like BGSG. This year more than ever it was important for HHS to play four games and get a look at all the girls in varsity action . Replacing 9 starters including a D1 goal keeper is a tall task. When HHS is at full strength and coach has settled on a player rotation, they will handle a team like Anderson Co.

Based on returning players, it would be hard to argue against ND and St. Henry as 1-2 in the N Ky area. HHS would be a bit back in third.

So are you saying the pre-season poll is a better barometer for the upcoming season than a head to head competition?

No, I'm saying that I wouldn't pay too much attention to a preseason coaches poll nor would I put much stock in a BGSG game in which HHS played 20 of the 21 girls on the varsity roster. BTW, the only girl that didn't play was 1 of only 2 returning starters on the team.

Fair enough but I'm betting Anderson County probably did the same thing. Your original post just sounded like you actually put more stock into a pre-season coaches poll. And you are right, nothing has been sorted out yet for most teams. As we all know, anything can happen in this strange game so polls mean nothing and even a head to head matchup may not actually determine the better team.

Mettens will be a fine GK, I don't know where they have Abner playing, but she's another Great Keeper! Watch out the Sophmore class may surprise you!

Any thoughts?

St. Henry seems to have found a gem in Jill Leedom's (Starting Junior - Defensive Specialist) younger sister, Libby (Freshman Forward). Libby has scored 5 of the teams 9 goals (and an assist) this season and Jill has helped shutout St. Henry's first two opponents (Simon Kenton and Conner).

Their play, along with Abbey Janszen (4 goals and an assist) and their solid goalkeeper have helped the Crusaders get off to a quick undefeated start.

Prediction: St. Henry 4 - Highlands 1

HHS has played much tougher competition in this young season, battling South Oldham, Dupont Manual and Lex Cath last week. St Henry has eased into the season with wins over SK and Conner.

I think HHS is much better than some in the area were giving them credit for. I can see a close match. In the end, the logical choice is St Henry to prevail.

This will be an excellent soccer match. Both teams, I'm sure, will come in with a game plan to attack perceived weaknesses of their opponent. With such evenly matched squads, this match should tell us if those weaknesses actually exist. The SH team will need to keep the Birds from playing the ball over the top to their lightning fast forwards and the Birds defenders will have to find a way to shut down some players that know how to find the back of the net. This should be a very good game!

Agreed, there is some talent coming up in Caketown! Malone is very talented as is Dupont and the Weyer Cousins. Mettens is gonna be a good one for sure!:thumb:

No way Campbell in top 20 esp ahead of powers like Brossart and some of the Louisville schools:taz:
