I guess you misunderstood what I meant by it. I took what you said to mean that people were attacking teachers. The point of my post was why couldn't a teacher get their continuing ed or take their masters course at night or on the weekends like everyone else. My mom, dad, and brother all received their masters while working full time jobs. My mom would drive to Bowling Green every Saturday to take classes. So why can't teachers do it?

 

You assume that teachers have nights and weekends free. Many times, that's not the case. For me, at night and on weekends I am working with athletic teams or doing the schoolwork that I don't get finished during the day, which is pretty much all of it, since I don't have a planning period. When I used to, I still had hours worth of work after whatever sports team that I was working with finished for the evening.

 

I think that online courses have made things somewhat more flexible for obtaining the required masters degree.

 

FWIW, I would personally prefer a more year around schedule. However, it does seem to have many, many drawbacks.

It won't go off at 4 pm because water pipes will freeze but it goes way down where it feels like it is off but the water won't freeze.

 

I have one of those ILLEGAL heaters under my desk too.

 

It was so cold in my room on Monday mornings this past winter, I put a thermometer and small cup of water on the windowsill INSIDE my windows. The thermoter read 52 degrees when I got to class and the water about 2 inches of it was frozen.

Did you check out the Webster county site with the 4 day weeks for students and a 5th workday for teachers?

 

Not sure how but it would only add 25 minutes onto the day at our high school.

 

I am assuming you have no planning period on T-F and all the planning time is on that Monday. That is how they can have only 4 days of students but get in the same amount of instructional time in a close to normal daily schedule.

 

It would be great to have planning, instructional time with the teachers in your department and the like.

That's cold. My principal came in and got onto my students for the hoods of their sweatshirts up and their jackets on and I told him I allow it because it is in the 50's and 60's in the mornings in my classroom.

 

Of course, my classroom still has the energy efficient windows of the 1950's when it was built, too.

No, I have NO planning period M-F. I teach six different subjects over seven class periods on a seven period day.

I can empathize with you. Being Alternative school teacher, they arrive at 8:05 and leave at 2:50. We eat lunch with them and even escort them to the restroom. The only time I am not with them is if I go to the restroom or have to go to court to testify.

Well obviously if you have all those activities it would be tougher, but still doable. However, if I was forced to get an additional degree for my job, I think that would be my priority, not coaching sports. JMO.

Considering that added $$$$ to my salary allowing me to pay off my college loans to get my degree, AND (you missed it) I could do my master hours in the SUMMER, it was a priority for me and I did it during the summer months.

 

I would argue that trying to do your college work during the school year lessens your effectiveness as a teacher. You are spending time that you could spend on lesson plans doing classtime, class work, research, etc, etc.

 

You want your teachers focusing on their students, than you WOULD NOT want them spending their time out of the school on other things.

Two years ago our school board was open to having a 4 day week like Webster. Our community wanted no part of it. We had town meetings throughout the county but it was not pretty.

Not when you are either coaching or sponsoring a club. Plus work is not over when the bell rings at 3:00. There is planning and grading homework, quizzes, tests, essay, etc that has to be taken home.

Doable, but it would hurt your performance in all areas.

 

Somebody has to coach and it is also a way to supplement your income.

Daycare was a big concern. Another big one was the classified workers getting cut days.
