Indiana/Kentucky Thoughts....

Featured Replies

There is a reason that China and the United States win a lot of Olympic medals and Honduras and Bangladesh do not. Or perhaps it's just because the Honduran coaches are too lazy to travel to China to scout.

Interesting Theory.

So, you are using the worlds two greatest super powers (USA & China) to represent Indiana?

And, you are using Third World Countries (Honduras and Bangladesh) to represent Kentucky?

Interesting position for a Kentucky fan to take.

But, that's your prerogative.

Size is an issue when you are comparing China to Honduras. So is nutrition, training facilities, genetics, coaching, etc....

Not so much when you are comparing Indiana & Kentucky! LOL!

If you were to be perfectly honest with yourself, you would have to admit that size is not the only issue with the Indiana/Kentucky problem. Nor is it a major issue.

If size was the biggest determinant in an outcome of a game... then how do you explain the beat-down Elizabethtown (700) put on Henderson County (2,010)?

So, back to the original point:

I have yet to see a single person mention anything about what Kentucky has to do to raise the level of their game.

Again, all I have read is excuses.

The population excuse is convenient.

It covers what has happened in the past.... and what will happen in the future.

What I am looking for is this: How do you improve the level of play in the state of Kentucky?

When you pick an all-star team you should pick the very best your state has to offer. The "BIG" problem in Kentucky is: (1) They do not get the best players in the state ( they maybe had 5 out of the Top 12 in the state this year, most of the others were ordinary players (2) In order to assure you get the best players in the state you will need to appoint a Game Director and a girls director that know what they are doing(the individuals involved now are clueless) (3) An independent Committee should then be formed to determine who is chosen for the team, those Committee Members must have a broad and comprehensive knowledge of the Girls Basketball in Kentucky as well as be individuals of high integrity and honesty (4) In no case should any High School coach be involved in the selection of a player for the team where they are the players High School coach (as was the case this year with 5 players making the team) in each of those cases none of those players were rated in the Top 15 of the state. I am not accusing anyone in the process of anything dishonest, however the appearance of independence should always be of up most importance. Active high school coaches should not be involved with the picking of the team other than to make nominations.

Bombsquad: You act like The fact that Indiana has more talent is just not a sufficent reason for them winning the games. In most years Indiana will have more talent on the floor. They have a bigger population and thus have MORE to choose from. Not to mention the fact that they are a hotbed for High School basketball. Why? Because High School basketball is a way of life in Indiana. All of the best athletes play basketball in Indiana.

Just look at the number of Division I players each state produces. Indiana outproduces Kentucky almost every year. This is why they dominate this game.

Now, Kentucky could certainly do some things to make the game more competitive. I agree with some who say the selection process is bogus. Appoint someone as head of Kentucky girls basketball kind of like USA basketball does. They pick the team.

Get the best players to play. Every year a few of the better players elect not to play. This is inexcusable. We are already at a disadvantage. If just a few of our best players don't play, this has a major impact on our team.

Practice more. When two teams who haven't gotten to practice much play the game is more one on one and thus more about who has the best individual players. Indiana is usually going to beat us here. We need to practice more so that we can play more of a TEAM game.

Support the team. Let's see maybe if we actually go to the games then people will take more pride in it. Hold the thing at Diddle, or EKU, or Rupp, or Freedom Hall....and actually fill the place. Indiana out attends us every year. It means more to them.

Unless the off-season (AAU) coaching gets better in KY, especially NKY, then I highly suggest taking the player's across the bridge to OH or IN. There's only a small handful of coaches that are truly developing these kids the right way at a young age. Most are only doing it for themselves or their own kid. Some "think" they can coach, but once you cross the bridge you will see another world. It's unfortunate, but until the coaching gets better and the organizations get better...ya gotta do what ya gotta do "IF" the child wants to take their game to another level and get exposure. You can probably count on one hand the KY teams that can truly compete once they cross the border.

The KY, mostly NKY, all star team beat a strong OH all star team. BombSquad...where was the praise? my point is...it's always negative negative negative!!!

That's a huge issue...some player's choose not to play for various reasons. Indiana does not seem to have that issue. Is it a difference in the passion for the game thus why there is a big gap?

I'm pretty sure nearly 40 players were invited and most accepted. Some notified the staff they could not make it. Approximately 10 didn't show up that accepted, but didn't let anyone know. If they would have let the staff know in advance then perhaps replacements could have been invited. You can't force or beg kids to play the game they are supposed to love. Also, at least two player's got hurt during tryout's so the list dwindled even more.

The player's that kept their word and attended tryouts, worked hard, and scarificed part of their summer to represent the state, prior to heading off to college, should be commended for their efforts and the negative from various "other" posters towards the coaches/players/programs should not be tolerated.

The Indiana media stated "this is the best all star team in Indiana history". These KY kids were winning by double-digits in both games over an incredibly talented Indiana team, but just couldn't hold on. The fact this team competed with a team of "ALL" D1 players (7 high-Major) with multiple McDonald all-americans that are already selected to the USA team is quite an accomplishment...and I for one am very proud of all of them!

I don't remember hearing/reading anything about the KY/OH All-Star game.

Obviously, the KY/OH game is not nearly as prestigious as the IN/KY game.

And, the IN/KY game is the topic of this thread.

As far as being "negative negative negative!!!"...

If you witnessed the games this past weekend - can you think of anything positive to say?

Accusing the AAU coaches of being the source of the problem is pretty weak.

"Some "think" they can coach" -

This is a pretty easy accusation to make from the stands.

Don't you wonder why all the brilliant minds are in the stands and not on the bench?

I would suggest that the high school coaches need to get the middle school coaches "on board" with what needs to be taught.

Again, all I hear/read are excuses - never any suggestions for a solution.

If there is no interest in trying to be competitive with Indiana, then I guess there is no need to continue this thread.

No nerve was struck.

I don't coach.

I just observe.

I think it's very weak to assign blame to the AAU coaches who are donating their time.

This is especially true when there are obviously so many knowledgeable people in the stands.

Did these knowledgeable people somehow get cheated out of an AAU coaching opportunity? LOL!

It's easy to point fingers.

It can be difficult to come up with honest solutions.

blaming it on AAU coaches is not valid IMO. Actually there are large numbers of girls that don't play AAU or any basketball besides school basketball. This is mainly due to most girls in this state playing multiple sports. Softball, Volleyball, and Soccer are huge draws for female athletes in the state of Kentucky. Many of the best athletes in this state only play basketball seasonaly...meaning only when their school team is playing.

There are a ton more AAU teams in Indiana because the interest there is much greater. More kids playing outside of season makes for better players. Indiana kicks are butt in that catagory....

I would hardly blame that on AAU coaches in the state of Kentucky. Getting more kids interested in focusing just on basketball at an early age would certainly go a long way to improving the quality of players this state puts out.....

We've exhausted this subject and some of you are teetering on rules violations.
