June 5, 200917 yr When I was a student at Morehead in the mid 1970s, the county was dry. Bootleggers in Haldeman and Salt Lick were close, but most often the procureing of alcohol involved a trip to Mt. Sterling. During years where the wet-dry issue was scheduled to be on the ballot, there was always a push to get out-of-state students (of which I was one) to register to vote in Rowan County; the theory (a sound one, as I recall) being that college students would tend to vote wet. My Dad has some really good stories about trips to Mt. Sterling. He also tells a story about a house somewhere in Rowan Co. that had a giant clock on the front porch. If the clock was on 12:00, it meant they were "open for business." Oh the good ol' days!
