Ouch. The 13th region has several very young teams, North and Corbin are 2 of those teams. It looks like Weaver has had no problem replacing 6 seniors (including his top 2 pitchers) and picking up right where they left off last year.

North is living up to their current #3 ranking right now. Weaver thinks they still have a long way to go, but they are playing pretty well right now, especially considering that the Jags, like most teams, have been limited on games so far due to the weather.

Wow, really surprising. After you get past North and South the 13th is kinda screwed up right now. Saw two weeks ago, Corbin lost to W'burg on a Tuesday, same day Harlan beat KC by several. On Thursday W'burg run-ruled Harlan in 5. But then Friday, KC beat W'burg 2-0. All this time, M'boro has went on a tear with six straight shutouts. Corbin who lost to W'burg is still the only team that has scored on them. The NL Corbin score should remind us that the GAP is as big as ever between the Laurels and everyone else in the 13th...for now...

The only good team Middlesboro has faced during their six-game win streak is Williamsburg. The Lady Yellow Jackets have faced teams with a combined record of 18-34 and that's not including Lee, Va. So their 6-0 tear as you might say isn't as impressive as it looks.

 

As for North, they are the best team in the region right now.

Least we agree North, right now, is the best. As far as Middlesboro goes, outside of North, they're the most consistent in the region now. You're right about the competition being less than stellar. But they have to play district games and the All "A" games. Still think it was impressive to shut out HC, W'burg, and Lee. FYI, Powers had 18 K's in the no-hitter against Lee.

A few years ago I saw some pretty talented kids at the little league level from Middlesboro. Those girls should between 7th & 9th grade by now. If they can keep building from the feeder programs up, they can build a good program. Jimison gave them a real weapon on the mound last year and helped the program take some steps forward. But I agree, everyone in the region is well behind North and South.

 

I am amazed at just how good North is playing this year with only 2 seniors and so much young talent. I have seen that young talent over the past several years and they are top notch. They are way ahead of schedule IMHO.

 

I did like Weaver's comments about everyone saying that North was so young and his response was simply that this wasn't his mindset and it shouldn't be an excuse "these girls can be as good as they want to be'. By the end of the season, this bunch will be a hard out for anyone come tournament time.

Megan Taylor has shown that she is one of the better pitchers in the state, but someone will have to step up behind her during post-season play. Playing so many games in a two-day period could be a problem because of fatigue.

You are dead on right.

 

8th grader Megan Baldwin, 7th grader Meagan Bryant, freshman Brandi Gay, and 8th grader Farris Strong all have the potential to be a solid backup. Baldwin and Bryant have the best shot as they have been pitching whereas Gay took a couple of years off from pitching. Strong is a very good athlete who probably has the most upside with more coaching. She has a great attitude and doesn't get rattled. Baldwin is a flamethrower who when she is on, is very tough.

 

I agree that some of these younger players will have to step up. NL had the advantage of having Abby Sears & Carrie Cobb as their top 2 pitchers last year. Abby was a Miss softball candidate, but noone showed more improvement than Cobb last year. Having a great 1-2 combo is necessary these days. The days of having 1 dominant pitcher and running the table are gone with the improvements the girls in Kentucky have made in hitting. Just ask Ryle. Allen was a force as a sophomore and carried Ryle to a title. But the next 2 seasons, the hitters improved and caught up to her. A pitcher that many thought unhittable just 2 years before, gave up 12 runs to North Laurel and O'Cath in back to back games in the state tourney.
