UFC 97: Redemption

April 18, 2009

Bell Centre Montreal, Canda

Anderson "The Spider" Silva vs. Thales Leites

Chuch "The Iceman" Liddell vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua

Who wins? And better yet, how do they win?

The Spider in a vicious knockout, and i'm really feeling the IceMan in this one. I'll go out on a limb and say the Chuck gets back to form and knocks out Shogun.

Anderson Silva will walk through Leites if they keep it standing. If it goes to the ground Leites might have a shot.

Chuck vs Rua should be fun. I think somebody will get knocked out in that one.

Definitely agree that Silva will defeat Leites if the fight is kept standing. I think Shogun and Chuck will be a good fight. I really thought Chuck could get this win especially with Shogun's conditioning issues but then I saw Chuck on Deadliest Warrior...the belly is looking abnormally bigger than usual!!!

Silva seems unbeatable right now. I know Thales is a submission specialist, but Spider knows how to handle a fight from the ground as well. The stand-up is no contest. Spider walks to another victory and gets closer to a superfight with St. Pierre (I hope!).

My heart says Chuck but my head says Shogun. I don't care for Rua and I hope Chuck can get back into the discussion at 205 with a thunderous knockout. I really do think Liddell's time has passed, however. I predict Shogun finishes the Iceman by TKO.

Silva will destroy GSP. There's no point in pursuing this fight other than $ and big PPV buys.

I used to feel the same way but now I don't know that to be true...you are entitled to your opinion, but I think that would be a nice fight at a catch weight (maybe 175). I do know that it would be a nice pay day for Dana White and the UFC.

I can agree on that.

I don't see any catch weight...if GSP wants the fight, he'll have to take it at 185. Regardless, he'll get knocked out no later than Round 2 if it happens.

I can agree on that.

I used to think that myself...but GSP has been an absolute terror lately. I'm not so sure anymore.

A terror against guys who can't match his package of size, strength and athleticism at 170. He has quite simply overpowered every opponent he's faced since the shocking loss to Serra.

That advantage will be a disadvantage against Anderson Silva. He can't stand and strike with Silva. We know that. And, he relies on his strength to overwhelm smaller and weaker opponents...that won't be an option vs. Silva. The only chance he has in this matchup is the same chance anyone has... a lucky punch.

Silva is just too strong for GSP. Especially, when you factor in his skill level both standing and on the mat...

I think GSP has more of a chance than just a "lucky punch" factor against Silva, but I see what you are saying. Silva is a different kind of animal right now. I've never even seen him rocked .

GSP would obviously have to take it down and win with ground and pound, but Silva is so vicious he'd probably be landing just as many strikes from the bottom . He is also aggressive in the submission game as well.

I can agree on that.

It could be at a catch weight. Franklin and Henderson fought at a catch weight, I know neither are a champ, but they did it.

I really don't think so, but I could be wrong.

I can't see him ground and pounding a guy who is stronger than him. He couldn't keep Silva on the ground...if he could even get him down. The Spider would either submit him or get back up and knock him out.

I'd rather see Silva fight some of the LHW's. I'm not terribly interested in seeing him destroy GSP.

Hendo has jumped back and forth between the 185 and 205 pound divisions for several years now. Franklin started at 205 and dropped to 185 before Silva chased him back to 205. So, any weight in that range would have worked for those guys.

It's not quite the same for a guy who is the 185 champion, but has fought at 205 to suddenly cut down some more. GSP is a big guy, he could fight at 185 if he wanted.:idunno:

Let's not forget that a very weak Travis Lutter did well against Silva on the ground for a while.
