Ram Posted March 26, 2009 Posted March 26, 2009 What does Owensboro need to do to improve in 2009? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.
wcj800 Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Well first off they have to find replacments for Yorel Shemwell and Yante Williams. After that if they keep doing what they were doing last year minus a few games against Christian Co they should be very solid this year. I know this being a NKY website that there will be the critics and the Highlands then everybody else, but the West should be pretty good this year especially the Devils that return the majority and an 11-2 record last season should be an indication that they have a chance this year. The Devils have added a few players that are going to be big difference makers this year filling in some key areas and the defense should be fast and scary as well as the offense. They will have speed everywhere on the field this year. I am going to say this just may be the year Owensboro returns to the finals. And after seeing what Christian Co. did in the finals last year until late in the game the 5A championship game just may be the best of the 6 games to watch this year.
Blockbuster Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 The top teams in region 1 all return about the same amount of kids. Speed is on the field everytime OHS, BG, Christian, Hoptown, and now Madisonville play. OHS will have no more speed than anyone else in region1. The talk of OHS returning to the title game has been going on for the past 3-4 years. I'll believe it when I see it.
wcj800 Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Blockbuster how many of those teams beat Owensboro last year? Christian Co. Where was that team when the season ended last year? State Runner-Ups How Many players do they return? Not Many Most of the teams mentioned lost significant graduates and OHS returns more starters than anybody mentioned so yes we and you will see.
Blockbuster Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Most of the teams mentioned lost significant graduates and OHS returns more starters than anybody mentioned so yes we and you will see. You obviously are not familiar with what Christian Co. and Bowling Green return. I'll agree Hoptown will be young. I have no clue about Madisonville, but they usually have kids that can run and some coaching stability for the first time in a long time.
wcj800 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Been around a while and yes I know what BG and CC return. Both should have nice teams but I would still lean toward the Devils. Since last year they beat BG and the sophmore laden team had a total collapse up 20+ against CC and lost that game in the 4th Quarter. One Maturity wwill not allow the lader to happen next time and word from a friend in BG is they will not be as good as last year but will be better with experience as OHS last year. Right now the west is.....OHS, BG, CC, JH then everyone else. I also don't know much about Madisonville but do know they scored a bunch of points from the kicking position last year and that scoring graduated so they will have to prove they can play with the other 4 before they can be put into the conversation. One last note the winner of District 1 host all playoffs games until the state finals if they keep winning in the playoffs. Which bolds well for OHS or CC. And based on the home crowds definately would benefit OHS at the dungeon and having a packed house every week.
hooaah Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 I agree that Owensboro should have a good season, and they are the favorite. But I don't know if they're going to be as good as you're making them out to be. They will miss Shemwell and Williams dearly. They were their only playmakers last year - period. You're making it sound like its between Christian and Owensboro, I wouldn't be so sure to count out Madisonville or Hopkinsville. I see 5A in the west being up for grabs at this point.
Blockbuster Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 All indications are Hoptown will be down this year. Christian and OHS will be the top in that district and then Hoptown/Madville. When all is said and done, region 1 comes down to 3 teams. I disagree that homefield advantage will have anything to do with the outcome of the games. Outcomes the past few years does not support that theory. It is convenient, but has no bearing on outcomes.
2nd and short Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 I would say that Bowling Green is the early favorite. They were young and a have a stud tailback. Good size upfront on both sides of the ball. BG starts the season with Christian County so we will find out early who has the upper hand. County might have the best skill kids in the west or even in 5A but only return one starter upfront on both sides of the ball. Hoptown will have an experience line and should have one of the better backfields in the west. They will be a little short handed n some skill areas but will have speed to burn. The big question for them is can they stop the run. Madisonville will be very solid and will make that district one of the better ones in 5a football.
hooaah Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Madisonville will be very solid and will make that district one of the better ones in 5a football. Agree, is district 1, 5A now the best district in Kentucky? Christian Co. Owensboro, Hoptown, Madisonville, Ohio Co... Maybe I'll start a thread.
wcj800 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Hooaah Owensboro has some pretty good talent that did not get on the field much last year except in blowouts because of Shemwell and Williams. OHS always has a good RB every year if you recall before Shemwell it was Nick Hall and Tyler Wimsatt. Shemwell was not even in the picture until they were gone and you see how good shemwell was. Owensboro also has a few players that did not play last year that will be there this year to fill some voids. I will be interested to see just how Madisonville does in our district since they played in 6A in a district where OHS played 3 of those teams last year and thumped them all including the district winner Daviess Co and Henderson Co along with Apollo. I do not think Madisonville will be in the league with OHS and CC yet or maybe not even Hoptown who all three would have probably won 6A dstrict 1 last year had they been in it. But this is just my opinion going on last years stats and you know how opinions are.
