Colonels set to swing away

The way Covington Catholic baseball coach Bill Krumpelbeck talks about how his team is going to play offense this season, you'd have thought he'd just picked up a copy of the book "Moneyball."

 

That's because unlike most of the 33 seasons he's been CovCath's coach, the propensity to bunt a lot and play for one run at a time has gone by the wayside. Instead, he's letting his potent lineup - especially a lethal middle of the order - swing away.

 

 

Part of that change in philosophy is his team's lack of pitching depth and part of it is the quality of his hitters - not because he read the famous baseball book about Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane, who disdains the bunt and wants his team to play for the three-run homer.

"It's not the style I usually coach with, that's for sure, but I just can't play for one run that much this year," said Krumpelbeck, who has coached teams to 727 wins and a state title. "We don't have tremendous team speed, but we do have some awfully good hitters and you just have to coach the material you've got."
