The goal is to attract as close to even numbers on each side of the line to guarantee a profit, no matter the outcome.

 

Coming into this late, that may be the goal but it is also unrealsitic. The sports books want to make as much profit as possible. They make more profit by figuring who they think the public will bet and at what spread.
