gchs_uk9 Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I've asked this several times and never got a real solid answer. Did the KHSAA combine these two districts? How does the tournament play out? Who qualifies for the regional tournament? You guys can debate the reasoning all you want...I just want to know some answers!
AirYardGo Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I don't think that you could combine districts, it would throw everything off.
King James Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Yes, they are combined into a superdistrict. Three teams from the 59th will make the 15th Region tournament, with the possibility of a 4th with a play-in game. It's a totally ridiculous setup...
HDE Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 INSANE How do the KHSAA board members from around the state allow the 15th to play by different rules?
AirYardGo Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 This makes no sense. So there is no 60th District anymore?
AirYardGo Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Is there a 6 team regional with only three Districts? I really don't understand this.
gchs_uk9 Posted February 20, 2009 Author Posted February 20, 2009 Is there a 6 team regional with only three Districts? I really don't understand this. No. This is how I have read it, so stick with me. The 57th District (5 teams) will send their winner and runner-up to the regional. The 58th District (4 teams) will send their winner and runner-up to the regional. The 59th District (6 teams) will send their winner, runner-up, and third place finisher to the regional. The third place team from the 57th will meet the fourth place team from the 59th in a play-in game to determine the eighth regional participant. To sum it up in a few less words, though...IT STINKS!
HDE Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 This happened almost a year ago. It's odd that it's still surprising to people, but I guess it is hard to comprehend considering it goes against everything that has been done in Kentucky high school basketball for 70 years.

It did happen, but show me a link to a well-known newspaper in Kentucky that reported on this. I read several of the "larger" papers in the state on a daily basis and I've never seen this reported. Maybe I just missed it. HDE, we've discussed this topic in threads before and you and I both think it's terrible. As you've posted many times before - if there are 256 or more schools in Kentucky, you have no need for three team districts and no need for three-district regions.

Wow! I followed, I guess this is crazy. I think in the next few yars they need to redistrict the entire state. No more three team districts or three district regions.

As you've posted many times before - if there are 256 or more schools in Kentucky, you have no need for three team districts and no need for three-district regions. Good point. I think Mike Fields may have talked about it, but that may have been it. It was discussed on BluegrassPreps though. I guess I'm saying that more people should be upset by this move. The 15th Region should not play by different rules. We had a six-team district in the 52nd until this year, but it didn't get to send three teams to the regional and be a Super District.
King James Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 We had a six-team district in the 52nd until this year, but it didn't get to send three teams to the regional and be a Super District. In the past the 59th (3 team district) and the 60th (3 team district) each sent two teams to the regional tournament, for a total of four teams. Now, as a combined district, they are sending 3 teams with the possibility of a 4th. The other districts in the 15th aren't happy with this setup, but it actually works out in favor of the 57th over the previous setup.
HDE Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 There were several three-team districts, but the KHSAA realignment remedied that for a while. The problem was expecting teams like the David School and Piarist to keep playing. They should have been in five-team districts. It's as simple as adding a couple of teams to the 15th.
King James Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Unfortunately even the 3 team district setup was better than the garbage we have now. I agree with Rick Bentley's (Pikeville College SID) thoughts about the current setup. It has already been decided that this will be the last year for the SuperDistrict setup. If it was being done as a test, which is what we have been told, then why was the idea trashed for next year before we see how it works out. If we already know it is a dumb idea then why was it implemented in the first place...
