Garrard County will look to get back on the winning side on Tuesday night when they play host to Mercer County. Garrard (19-6) had a challenging past week, playing four games in six nights. It seemed to catch up to them late Saturday when Casey County extended the Lions to overtime and won going away. How Garrard responds will determine the ability to win this game.

Mercer (14-12) has been up and down all season. The Titans have played the entire year without head coach Nelson Cundiff, who was injured in a pre-season automobile accident. Cundiff has made a few appearances lately and Mercer seemed to be playing better. A loss to a bad Frankfort team on Thursday broke a stretch of five wins in six games for the Titans, but they responded well in knocking off Rockcastle County by 16 on Friday night.

I think both teams are legitimate threats to win the 12th Region and both would certainly like nothing better than getting the last week of the regular season off to a winning start. Should be an excellent game between two old 46th District rivals.

Historical Preview:

(For statistical purposes, I've merged the record of the "Mercer County Scotties" and "Mercer County "Titans")

*This marks the 102nd meeting between the schools

*Garrard County leads the all-time series 52-49

*This will be the 48th meeting in Lancaster, where Garrard leads 28-19

*Mercer won the last meeting in Lancaster (90-74 in 2007) and has won four of the last six on Garrard's home floor

*Garrard's last home win over Mercer was a 68-60 victory in 2005

*Garrard won at Mercer last season, breaking a stretch of three consecutive Scottie/Titan wins

More Historical Stuff:

*Garrard has played Mercer County more than any other opponent in school history

*The second most played series was 92 games with now-closed Harrodsburg

*The Pioneers led the all-time series 68-24 when Harrodsburg closed after the 2005 season

School Records:

*Garrard County's 19 victories are tied for the third most in school history

*Twice Garrard has won 20 games in a season (1982 and 1989)

*Garrard has won 9 home games this season, with two games remaining. The record for most home wins in a season is 11 in 2000.

Other Notes:

Garrard County recently added a game with Madison Central, replacing the twice-postponed matchup with Madison Southern. The Lions will travel to Richmond to face the Indians on Thursday night, February 19.
