Turning lights on, shooting them out

Early morning practices helped Holmes' Riley become scoring threat

When he splashed on the Kentucky high school basketball scene as a first-year starter on the best team in the state, knocking down jumpers with pinpoint accuracy, Holmes senior JaMel Riley could easily have been labeled an overnight sensation.

But that would be an affront to all those early mornings.

During his four years at Holmes, Riley has started his school day earlier than most. The skinny kid with big hands and long arms has perfected his jump shot in the junior high gym on campus, the one so small the 3-point line ends at the sideline, not the baseline. Every day. As many jumpers as he can get in before classes start at 8:10 a.m.

I really like his dedication by coming in before school to work on his shooting. He seems level headed and I liked his comments that he is a passer first, then a shooter.

This young man is now and will continue to be a huge key for Holmes to possibly win a State Championship.

Riley is probably the single most important player on that team IMO. He opens up so many things for them both inside and out. You'll rarely see him not on the floor.

Most importantly though, he is a very good student. He'll be playing ball somewhere at the next level.

This is really good to hear :thumb:

His work ethic does not surprise me at all. I'm so glad for his success because he does work very hard on his game. He is a tremendous leader with his poise and confidence on the court, which surely helps the younger players around him. Plus, he is a great kid off the court too.

This is a very nice article. It is good to see kids that are so dedicated to making themselves the best at whatever it is they do. This speaks volumes for Riley and hopefully at some level he will be able to continue playing after this year because his hardwork and dedication really do deserve that chance. I love watching him shoot the ball, I never think he is going to miss when he goes up hahaha.
