Clay County (8-6, 1-0) What’s the scoop: A tough schedule has hurt the Lady Tigers’ overall record. Surprise, surprise: Clay County will continue to reign in the top spot until a 13th Region team can beat them. What’s ahead: Harlan County will get a shot Friday at home against the Lady Tigers. Clay County will travel to Corbin and play Knox Central Saturday before a home date against 12th Region power Rockcastle County Monday. 2. Harlan County (11-2, 5-0) What’s the scoop: The Lady Black Bears are the surprise team of the region. Surprise, surprise: Harlan County gets a chance to see how good it is Friday at home against top-ranked Clay County. What’s ahead: The Lady Black Bears will entertain Clay County Friday before hosting Lee, Va. on Monday. 3. North Laurel (8-2, 3-0) What’s the scoop: The Lady Jaguars are beginning to catch fire and have the talent to compete for the school’s first-ever regional crown. Surprise, surprise: The Lady Jaguars are winners of four straight, which includes wins over South Laurel and Jackson County. What’s ahead: North Laurel will travel to Madison Central Friday before hosting Perry Central Saturday. 4. Jackson County (8-2, 4-1) What’s the scoop: The Lady Generals suffered a minor setback after dropping a 53-34 decision to North Laurel at home last week. Surprise, surprise: North Laurel limited Kourtney Tyra to only eight points. What’s ahead: The Lady Generals will host Madison Southern Friday before another home date against South Laurel Tuesday. 5. Whitley County (4-9, 2-5) What’s the scoop: The Lady Colonels are an improving team. Surprise, surprise: Whitley County is in a must-win situation Friday at home against district rival South Laurel. What’s ahead: The Lady Colonels host South Laurel Friday before traveling to play Lewis County at Corbin High School Saturday. The Best of the rest No. 6 Williamsburg (8-5, 6-2) What’s the scoop: The Lady Yellow Jackets made a lot of noise by upending South Laurel by eight points last week. No. 7 South Laurel (8-6, 3-3) What’s the scoop: The wheels have fallen off recently for the Lady Cardinals. Look for things to get better for South Laurel soon. No. 8 Middlesboro (7-6, 3-2) What’s the scoop: The Lady Yellow Jackets picked up a big win this past week against Corbin. No. 9 Corbin (5-7, 2-3) What’s the scoop: Look for Corbin to move up by the end of the season. The Lady Redhounds are a good team. I don't think South will stay down at #7 for very long, ... but they are missing Wombles and Sizemore from last year a great deal this season IMHO. South Laurel and Harlan County both beat the Lady Yellow Jackets and Corbin only lost by six and Whitley County by two points to Middlesboro. That's a far cry than a 22-POINT HOME LOSS. Maybe the Harlan County game was close because of it being a rival game? Harlan might deserve to be at the No. 10 spot, but any higher? Nope, not right now.
