Gotta go with Anderson by 8.

 

This could well be the Bearcats year to return to the Sweet 16. I felt for them last year, when practically the whole team became ill during the 8th Region, including Penny.

 

Bearcats coach Glen Drury - second in tenure in the 8th Region only to Oldham's Gary Forrest - is one of the top coaches in the state. He's one of the most unsung coaches in the state, probably because he hasn't been able to get past Shelby, Oldham, and (formerly) Scott County enough to reach Rupp and get the attendant press... Drury's one of my favorites - I'm not from Anderson County, but I'd like to see the Bearcats do well for Glen...he deserves it.

 

I have a friend who has lived and been involved in AC sports for 20 years. Anderson has only been to the big dance twice. 1971 with Connor, Green, and Ruggles when they were runner-ups and 1997 with Beasley when they got beat in the first round. Many of the natives are restless/frustrated and many will settle for nothing less than a region championship this year from Drury.

Mercer backcourt needs help! You can't start the offense at mid court! While Taylor is being triple teamed someone has got to step up, Maybe when McCloud gets healthy.

Without naming names, the point guard spot is not the problem. McRay and Patterson both do an adequate job of bringing the ball up the court and setting the offense.

McCloud has been playing and I don't see any difference in him and the ones playing point.

Actually if you and your friend know so much about Anderson County basketball you would know that they have been 3 times instead of 2. They also went in 74. If people are mad at Drury they obviously know nothing. He has less talent every year and still competes at a high level. This year he does have the talent to win it I agree. The fact is he has had the talent to win it 3 times prior to this year. 1 year he won it, 1 year he was beat in the finals and his team was up 7 with 3:00 minutes left and his best player missed foul shot after foul shot. That was his fault I guess. The other year he was beat in the semis on a last second shot. If your getting your information from someone in AC you may want to talk to someone else.

That's truly a shame (that people are getting restless). The man is a fantastic coach and a class act. I can only name 2 or 3 coaches who can get what he gets out of the talent he has. I can remember some of Anderson's teams that had no size or appreciable talent, that still gave the 8th Region powers fits. Last year, he probably had the best team in the region, but it certainly wasn't his fault that Penny and almost the entire starting lineup came down sick the week of the region tournament.

 

I didn't think he had the best talent in the 8th Region in 1997, but they got it done.

 

I don't live in Anderson, but as a longtime 8th region observer, they should let him coach as long as he wants and name the gym after him when he finally does retire!

 

Often, if you really want to know how good a coach is, ask the other region coaches what they think of him/her. I can tell you that Drury is well-respected by his peers...

In the 8th Region, lots of coaches would be getting fired if winning the region was the criteria for keeping your job...Since 1975:

Shelby County 10 region titles

Scott County 10 region titles (no longer in region; moved to Region 11)

Anderson County 1 (1997)

Grant County 1 (1979)

Shelbyville 1 (1975) (school closed)

Bullitt East 1 (2005) (no longer in region; moved to Region 6)

First of all I didn't say he or I know a lot about AC Basketball. I did watch 5-6games with him last year and one so far this year. I don't think we qualify as experts. 3x instead of 2 point being they haven't been a lot in the last 35 years. I get my information from a good friend who know's many of the kids from coaching them at different levels. His opinion is just that and no more valued or devalued than anyone else. Didn't mean to turn your egg basket over.

You didn't turn my egg basket over. I just get tired of people in Kentucky thinking they know basketball just becasue they watch it or coach youth league. Probaly also the people that say Tubby can't coach because he won it with Pitino's players.

Hey! Great breakdown! Even though I go to the state tourney every year I did not realize that this region was so top heavy but even at the top. If asked, I would have said that Oldham, Scott and Shelbyville were the cream but I did not realize that it had been this dominate. Good stat!:thumb:

OK, Mercer has a 5'8 power forward. I am interested in seeing his post up moves! BTW, I have been to their last 2 games and have yet to see Nick post up or play the power forward position. Who would he post up or out rebound? The cheerleaders?!?

Personal opinion - I think a healthy Anderson team wins last year's region...but that was a very "under the weather" team that played in New Castle last year. No slight intended to a gritty Shelby County that played three tough games to win it (over Owen County, South Oldham, and Gallatin County), but I just think Anderson - when healthy - was the best team in the region.

 

(For the record, though, Anderson did lose one Region game prior to the Region tournament, losing in the 30th final to Shelby County.)

 

Of course - "them's the breaks!". We all have to live with BAD LUCK every now and then! I know my favorite teams have certainly had their fair share!!

The smaller schools would point out something else: No small school has won the championship since Shelbyville in 1975. Oldham, Bullitt East, Shelby County, Scott County, Grant County, and Anderson County are all big schools.

I haven't really made a comparison, but probably in few regions have the bigs so dominated the smaller schools. There hasn't been a Paintsville, Breckinridge County, University Heights, June Buchanan, Morgan County, Adair County, etc. rise up to knock off one of the giants...

 

I don't think Shelbyville was that big (in 1975), but honestly, I don't know.
