Dragons came out slow, trailed 17-11 after one, then blew out the Panthers behind a ferocious full-court press and half-court 1-3-1 that forced over 30 turnovers.

 

South led by 13 at the half, while allowing just four points and five shots in the second period. They continued to extend the lead rapidly throughout the third, before calling off the dogs in the fourth with heavy substitutions and no pressure "D".

 

Sixteen Dragons played and thirteen scored. Drew Kraemer, as expected, led the team in scoring with 27; Casey Jackson had 10. Very impressed with the rebounding of Brice Jewett, who (unofficially) had 6 boards. (not an extraordinary number, but with all the reserves playing so much, his "rebounds / minute" total was impressive)

 

After a horrid start shooting the ball (4 of 17 in 1Q), South regrouped to hit over 45% of their shots, including 10 of 19 in the fourth with the subs in. The team that tied for the lead in the state last year for most threes made, however, struggled beyond the arc, hitting just 5 of 22.

 

Of a greater concern for the Dragons was the poor FT shooting...just 10 of 20. (yikes!)

 

With so many subs, nobody else hit double figures.

 

Ludlow definitely suffered from the fact that four of their five starters were playing football two weeks ago, and the fact that one of their starting guards was out.

Great scheduling by South Oldham.

I don't think Ludlow was going to be competitive with South, regardless, but they undoubtedly will improve as their football players get in basketball shape.

 

It's not a surprise that many of the schools whose football teams are still playing, or who were just eliminated last week, are struggling with their early games...

 

Looking over Tuesday's scores...St. X, Boyle County, Elizabethtown, Central all lost...Oldham lost on Wednesday...I didn't look at all of them, but those jumped out at me... a notable exception was Highlands, who outlasted Mason County in OT...

I just do not understand why Ludlow would schedule a strong program such as South Oldham in an opening game. It is not an easy trip from Ludlow to Crestwood. It's a single A school taking on a big school. Makes no sense to me imo.

Seems like a lot of small schools are doing it, Scott vs Silver Groove, Ludlow and South Oldham and Beechwood vs Holmes.
