September 11, 200818 yr There are plenty of experts who believe that embryonic stem cell research has the potential to yield medical benefits that are not possible with other methods. Those experts can use their own money, or money from private organizations. I am not categorically against government grants for scientific research, but our tax dollars should be used for the methods that have shown results. Coupled with the fact that I find it ethically questionable, I have no intention of supporting it. I concede that if embryonic stem cell research begins to show results unseen in other forms of stem cell research, I will have to re-evaluate my position. But until then I can't support it. Does anyone know if GOP members are against all stem cell research or just embryonic?
September 11, 200818 yr I say do all the stem cell research possible as fast as possible. I am willing to admit I am not as educated on this subject as most.Could someone please explain to me what makes this ethnically questionable?

I would imagine the evangelical portion of the GOP oppose it across the board, but I don't know about the rest of the party, especially since it is a politically contentious issue and is thus defined in terms of black and white, Republican and Democrat. I did think that Bush struck a nice middle-ground with his policy on it, by not opposing it, per se, but not allocating government funds for it.

I am willing to admit I am not as educated on this subject as most.Could someone please explain to me what makes this ethnically questionable? There are multiple different types of stem cells. One of which, embryonic stem cells, are taken from human embryos. For those of us who believe that life begins at conception, this is disrespectful to life. My position (and, in this instance, it is identical to the position of the Catholic Church, FWIW) is that we should vigorously research all of the types of stem cell research except embryonic.
