Reporting of players' heights and weights

Featured Replies

In another thread, someone commented about the heights and weights of some of the players being "inflated." This got me to thinking... do programs/coaches routinely "inflate" the heights/weights of their players? If so, why? What purpose does it serve??? It seems like, if anything, a coach would want to under-report his players' sizes in the hopes of tricking the opponents into thinking that the players are smaller/weaker than they actually are. The only gain I can see in "inflating" the numbers would be to draw attention to the kids from college scouts. What's the deal?

I was always listed as 2-3 inches taller and 15lbs heavier for no reason at all..

I think the reason is to jump off the pages to sports writers and college scouts, although both these groups expect it when they see it.

Some coaches inflate the numbers, some deflate the numbers. I'm not sure if any of this has any affect or not, but I do remember getting a scouting report when I was in high school that had the guy across from me listed as 6'0. I was glad, I had had 6'3 and 6'4 guys for several weeks. But, when I lined up, the 6'0 guy was somewhere in the neigborhood of 6'5. I was not happy.

My son is always reported as being 6' when in actuality he is 6'2". Also, his weight is usually reported about 10 pounds less. However, in defense of the coaches on weight....these weights usually come from preseason before practices really kick in. As the players get back in shape and start lifting more, their body weights increase. JMO
