You can shoot both BUT there is a chance 5.56 will blow up in a .223 chamber. 5.56 has higher pressure, so you can shoot .223 in a 5.56 chambered rifle, but you should never shoot 5.56 in the tighter .223 chamber. The Ruger Mini-14 and some commercial AR-15s are suited for the 5.56mm. But check with your manufacturer before you try it. Otherwise, you might be replacing your barrel sooner than expected.
