Rank these recent state champions

Featured Replies

Please rank the following previous champions:

2000 Highlands (old 3A)

2001 Boyle County (old 3A)

2002 Boyle County (old 3A)

2003 Boyle County (old 3A)

2004 Highlands (old 3A)

2005 Lexington Catholic (old 3A)

2006 Covington Catholic (old 3A)

2007 Highlands (5A)

All these teams were old 3A rivals during the 2000's.

I did not include this year's 3A (Louisville Central) and 4A (Lexington Catholic) champions, since both were beaten by 2007 Highlands, which is on the list as this past year's representative.

To provide some info about the 3 HHS squads...

2000 HHS: Guidugli, Grover, Scott, and Hamblen's senior years. Team went 14-1, losing a game to Cincy Elder by 7 points early in the season. Set some offensive records during that year.

2004 HHS: Nevels, Stowers, Hubbard, and Mitchell's senior years. Team went 14-1 before the forfeits, and 2-13 afterwards. Only on-the-field loss was to Cincy Elder by 10 early in the season. Defense was key to team's success.

2007 HHS: Went undefeated at 15-0 this past year. Team had a good balance of strengths, and was very deep.

Maybe some of the fans of BC, CCH, and LexCath can give us some info to jog our memories.

I might be a little bias, but here's my picks in order:

Highlands 2000

Boyle 2001

Highlands 2004

Highlands 2007

Boyle 2002

Boyle 2003

Lex. Cath 2005

Cov. Cath 2006

1) 2001 Boyle Co

2) 2007 Highlands

3) 2002 Boyle Co

4) 2000 Highlands

5) 2006 Cov Catholic

6) 2005 Lex Cath

7) 2003 Boyle Co

Wow... 2000 Highlands ranked 4th??? I would have to think that of this entire list, the top two would be (in no particular order) 2000 Highlands and 2001 Boyle County.

2003 and 2000 Boyle were both great- hard to pick which one was better. I realize 2000 Boyle was only 2A, but that was a great football team. In my opinion, both were better than Boyle 01 and 02.

I haven't seen the others enough to comment.

Here's a look at the Boyle Reps on this list:

2001 Boyle

Rebels averaged 51 points per game and gave up 8. Team was led by a high octane offense. Mr. Football Jeff Duggins, Jacob Tamme, Brodie Overstreet, Justin Nichols and Casey McCoy and a good kicker in David Jennings. (TCU?)

2002 Boyle

Similar to the year before but with 2 losses. Averaged only 40 points per game but gave up only 4.4 per game on the season. They started Sophomore Brandon Smith at QB and Jacob Tamme at WR. Their defense was led by Michael Paul Webb and Brodie Overstreet.

2003 Boyle

They went 15-0 against one of their better schedules in season and playoffs. Led by Brandon Smith, Quinn Givhan at RB, Seth Tamme, Brad Cloud and Ian Young on the line this was a well balanced "team." They beat Class A champ Danville handily, got by Highlands in the Regular Season, and beat 4A teams Lafayette, Henry Clay and Nelson County convincingly. Went on the road in the playoffs to beat #1 ranked Paducah Tighlman 35-21 (Hunter Cantwell, Joe Casey and company) and won going away at the end against Highlands in the state final.

I agree with Chief Smoke that the Best Boyle team was the 2000 squad that added Matt Quinn, Travis Leffew and Taylor Begley to the mix.
