Well, I'm certain you're not talking about me, as I've likely fired a weapon thousands of times more than you. I certainly have no fear of firing a weapon. I'm a member of the NRA, own many guns, and have trained many agents in firearms - but having my school hold a firearms class - call it a "hunter training" or whatever you want - for 7th graders just doesn't sound right to me. The class can include all those wonderful topics you laid out - and they are indeed valuable topics - but which part of the class do you think 12-13 year olds will REALLY be interested in? Give them a gun with dummy rounds in it and it will certainly stoke the fires of interest in what a gun is like to shoot with live ammunition in it. Again, not saying that is a terrible thing, if done properly. I just don't think I want my school system teaching it.

 

Give it a few years and the tenured teacher will have a g(lock) on how the class will be taught.

Ok...I'm telling my age here,but we when I was in elementary school,the fish and wildlife people came into our schools,taught us how to RESPECT a firearm,hunt and fish. Am I COMFORTABLE around a gun..NO..and I never will be...WHY? Because I was taught to RESPECT what it could do..both at home and in school. My father taught me the best lesson I ever learned...NEVER EVER point a gun at another person unless your life or your family's life is in danger.Then shoot to kill..no hesition...no remorse!

I was also taught how to take game,dress it and prepare it. In FFA I was also taught how to raise a garden and tend livestock.

I may worry about a lot of things,but going hungry and being threatened by some psycho are not among them.

Has scouting and hunt clubs become obsolete?

 

So we have national standards to not allow firearms on school property which is a stronger standard in the state of Kentucky (check around for the blue colored signs on school property) but want advocacy to allow them in for use and instruction?!

Simple solution : make the training available to those interested and have a signed permission slip from their parents. It is not unuasual for a child to want to know about firearms. I would think you may be able to help some of them understand the seriousness of using one. I own many, and have used them since nine or ten years old. Also have seen several adults make mistakes with them in training and in the field. I thank my father for teaching me early. I know it is up to me to be sure MY firearms are used in a safe manner no matter who has posession of them. I have seen mistakes made on the fireing line with full autos being used by" trained "professionals, so you can never be too careful with firearms. I personally never depend on someone else for gun safety , I would even get on one end or the other of the line to try to eliminate having to watch people on both sides of me. I think they need the training if they are going to be around guns. It's not for everbody but I still enjoy hunting and shooting ! West Virginia may want to lower their fees for out of state fishing and hunting , that may increase their revenue !!
