Les
Girls Top 5 1. Whitley County (15-4, 9-1) What’s the scoop: What a week it has been for 13th Region basketball. This is the first time ever I’ve had new No. 1’s in both the boys’ and girls’ ratings during the same week. Congrats goes out to Larry Anderson and his Lady Colonels after upending previous No. 1 Clay County this past week. Surprise, surprise: The Lady Colonels snapped the Lady Tigers’ 36-game win streak against 13th Region opponents, while Holly Jones came up big. What’s ahead: Can Whitley County remain at the No. 1 spot? We’ll see Friday when the Lady Colonels go head-to-head against No. 3 South Laurel. 2. Clay County (14-5, 4-1) What’s the scoop: It sure is weird to see Clay County rated No. 2. Surprise, surprise: I was really surprised to see the Lady Tigers limited to only 32 points during their loss to Whitley County. What’s ahead: Clay County will get a chance to snap its two-game losing skid today against Bell County before hosting Magoffin County Jan. 26. 3. South Laurel (13-7, 7-3) What’s the scoop: A 17-point win over Corbin, combined with a 24-point win against Jackson County has moved the Lady Cardinals up a spot. Surprise, surprise: Lauren Wombles is beginning to hit stride at the right time. She scored 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds against Corbin before dishing out a 21-point effort against Jackson County. What’s ahead: South Laurel will get a big test against No. 1 Whitley County Friday before squaring off against Williamsburg Jan. 31. 4. Middlesboro (19-1, 15-1) What’s the scoop: Middlesboro could easily be rated in either the No. 1, 2, or 3 spots, but for right now, I still remember the Lady Yellow Jackets getting blitzed by Corbin. Surprise, surprise: Middlesboro has won seven games in a row and captured the 13th Region All ‘A’ Classic title in the process. What’s ahead: The Lady Yellow Jackets will travel to play Harlan Jan. 29 and Cumberland Feb 1. 5. Jackson County (13-4, 5-2) What’s the scoop: The Lady Generals recovered from their loss to South Laurel by dominating Wolfe County, 94-39. Surprise, surprise: Jackson County has the talent to knock off some of the top teams, but in the long run its lack of depth will catch up with the Lady Generals. What’s ahead: Jackson County will host Breathitt County today. The Best of the Rest No. 6 Corbin (10-8, 5-5) What’s the scoop: The Lady Redhounds are a dangerous team. No. 7 North Laurel (8-8, 1-4) What’s the scoop: The Lady Jags are struggling. No. 8 Barbourville (11-6, 9-4) What’s the scoop: The Lady Tigers fell short in the 13th Region All ‘A’. No. 9 Williamsburg (8-6, 5-5) What’s the scoop: The Lady Yellow Jackets are losers of three straight. No. 10. Harlan (9-9, 7-4) What’s the scoop: Went 2-1 in 13th Region All ‘A’ Tournament. Les
I call'em like I see'em. They're fortunate they didn't drop to No. 3 behind Middlesboro or South Laurel. They've had more than one loss as well.
