gchs_uk9 Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Any ideas about this weekend's Garrard County/Washington County game in the Death Valley Bowl in Stanford? Coach Stonebraker has commented on the radio that Washington County might be the best team the Lions face this season, with possible exceptions being Somerset and Frankfort. Apparently the Commanders have speed to burn. The young Lions (only 11 juniors and seniors) have potential to be much improved this season, but it may come a little later in the season. As for a prediction...check back later!
Bright Horizons Posted August 19, 2007 Posted August 19, 2007 Garrard County pulls an upset and wins.
Hearsay Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 He's right, Washington County will be very good and will make some noise this year.

gchs_uk9 Posted August 20, 2007 Author Posted August 20, 2007 This will be the sixth meeting between the two schools. They met twice in the early 1970s when they were in the same district and then again in the early 1990s when both were in the same Class A Region. 1972 Lancaster Garrard County 20 Washington County 13 1973 Springfield Washington County 26 Garrard County 6 1990 Springfield Game was never played; lightning storm prevented play and was never rescheduled. 1991 Lancaster Garrard County 19 Washington County 17 *Garrard County won on a late safety. Springfield - Second Round of Playoffs Washington County 14 Garrard County 13 *Garrard County kicker Carlton Jeffrey missed a field goal (one back judge slipped, the other judge looked down at his fallen fellow official; neither saw the kick) that everyone there said was good. Still a source of pain in Lancaster! 1992 Springfield Garrard County 13 Washington County 7
Hearsay Posted August 20, 2007 Posted August 20, 2007 Those early 90's GCHS teams were awesome. I'll never forget the 1993 semi-state game against Bardstown where the GCHS field goal attempt fell about 8 yards short as time expired. My brother had scrambled to the 1 yard line to set up the go-ahead score with less than 1 min. to go. Good memories of good football.

I was in the seventh grade and I remember that I cried afterwards! Kicking game was seemingly always a struggle in the early 90s and it seemed to bite us that year, too. I thought Garrard had a team in 1993 that was capable of winning the state (yes, they would have had to won at Fulton County and then over Beechwood), but we'll never know. Never could get over the regional final hump!
gchs_uk9 Posted August 22, 2007 Author Posted August 22, 2007 Washington Co 38-2 I think it will be a little closer than that, but Garrard will have to do their part. I have no doubt Washington County can put 38 on the board.
gchs_uk9 Posted August 23, 2007 Author Posted August 23, 2007 Here's an interesting read about "the kick" from the 1991 playoff game between Garrard and Washington. Still ruffles some feathers in Lancaster! http://www.thespringfieldsun.com/pages/sports/story_2.asp
The Scribe Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Washington County could be a team to keep an eye on this year. I'll take Perry's crew by 11.
gchs_uk9 Posted August 24, 2007 Author Posted August 24, 2007 Washington County could be a team to keep an eye on this year. I'll take Perry's crew by 11. I'm hearing from some folks around the area that Washington has a team capable of beating both Danville and Bardstown in their district. I don't think they'll win both, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them get one win out of the deal.
