Bluegrass Championship in Frankfort ... schedule?

I may be spending a couple of days at the state baseball tournament and might want to check out some hoops while I'm there, with the AAU tournament at the KBA and the Bluegrass Championship in Frankfort.

Why have so many teams decided to play in this tournament & not the state AAU in Lex? I thought I heard a few years ago about poor officiating at the AAU tourney so is this why?

Here are what most teams have said.

Only $200 or so to enter

High school officials

8 minute quarters, no running clock

3 officials for the single elimination games

High school gyms

AAU

$125 for your varsity and your JV plays free. Varsity teams at least a four game quarantee.

Three officials for every game.

All air conditioned high school courts.

This does not sound to compelling of a reason to me! Wonder what else there could be to the fact so many good teams are in Frankfort?

Why not?

Most likely because the BGC went off well last summer. Also I would suspect there is a little reciprocation among coaches and their respective programs with summer ball. I doubt booster clubs make much money hosting summer ball activities, but I am sure that they make zero at the State AAU Tournament hosted by KBA.
Why not?

Went to the tourney with two teams in 2006. It was a good experience..competition, venues, etc. Unless one is trying to promote another competing tournament for some reason, this is as good as any we went to.

Why not have the BGC a different week than the AAU as I would like to see the teams compete in each or at least get the bulk of the good teams in one or the other.

That is a good question. Maybe that is something the people in Frankfort and the AAU people can work out for 2008. You are right in that there are a lot of quality teams in both tournaments.

Only idle conjecture, but sometimes there are coaches who want to keep their teams off of the radar screen (and away from key matchups) until the regular season, and sometimes until tourney time if possible. I only say this as I have been involved in a situation like this in the past. If this happens, it could prevent having a summer tournament will all the same teams that may be playing in two separate tournaments.

It was pretty much the officiating two years ago. Bouchers Referee Camp was short of campers and they worked the few officials they had to death. Last year it was officiated great with little or no complaints. I was given a red flag from some of the other coaches that a few coaches were unhappy with the Referee camp. I talked to all the coaches that were complaining so much and promised them there would be some major changes the following year and I did as they asked. Get better quality officials and we did lower the price and we did. Let your families and all other coaches in free and we did. I did as they asked because the State AAU Varsity tournament belongs to the teams. I found out alot about people that I once looked up to, to find out later that they were not who you thought he or she was. I worked for 16 years with KY AAU most of it was enjoyable.

Even without some of the teams that went to Frankfort. There was 62 teams last year 37 Varsity and 25 JV last year. The numbers are close to the same this year. Last years tournament was free to everyone. It was the 30th year anniversary of KY AAU. I see no problem in Coach Chalk and Salsman running their own tournament. Its America we have a choice. KBA does agood job. They have been more than hospitable and charitable to all the Lexington private and public schools. Theres no problem just a choice!

AAU basketball is still a good product and you get an oppportunity to expand your game. AAU is geared to the younger kids. Once you get to high school the edge slips a little unless you are the die hard serious player or teams.

The competition in this country will allways be at National AAU tournaments and that will never change.
