On a neutral court I would say Cumberland,Clay,& Corbin are about even.Bell is right there also they are just real athletic and big.Cumberland is young on the bench and small with 4 sophomores & 3 freshman.1 senior & 1 junior.If anyone seen Cumberland against Owensboro Catholic then they seen a good showing.I know Catholic's record wasn't ideal,but they was one of the better teams of that record I've seen.They also were the returning state runners up in the All"A".Give Cumberland time to learn.This is the first year since these boys have been playing high school ball that they are competing at the top of the region.If you remember what Cumberland did a few years ago in the region I know they can do it this year with a stronger group of players.If anyone counts the Skins out like my friend Old School DR said you could be in for a rude awakening.

Man, no offense, but the year Cumberland won the region it wasn't that strong ... I believe Rock was OK ... but I've had numerous people tell me on press row that year that was the worst team they have ever seen represnt a region at the state tourney and that was by some of the guys that had seen A LOT ...NOT KNOCKING CUMBERLAND at all, though. They can make noise in the region.

If anyone can remember, I made the prediction in 03 that Cumberland would win it. I was posting under a different name back then but that class was talented. Not taking anything away from Bill but with a coach like a Mike Deaton, Billy Hicks, Mike Jones, ect, it wouldn't have been viewed as an upset. That group was overshadowed by the Corbin seniors back in the day but were also undefeated in middle school. Obviously middle school doesn't matter because after going 100 and somehting and 0, Corbin would have won state as seniors if that held true. My fact was that team was very solid. Creech was possibly the best player in the region, Smith was a machine, Battle could get hot, Haynes and Kevin could rebound like crazy and man the post, Charles Price could lock you down.

 

I really think that next year, it'll be a battle between Corbin and Cumberland for the top spot. Both teams are machines in the starting 5 with both having a star (Crawford and Johnson). The advantage would go to the Hounds because like this year, they have a solid bench that goes 10 deep if not more. However Jerry is a good coach and person. I have no doubt, he'll get the best out of those boys.

Cumberland and Corbin have the best teams coming back,but neither are near finished this year.Who knows this could be the finals this year because anything can happen in the tournament.Cumberland was 11-13 with sub .500 district and region records entering the district tournament that year and Rockcastle was 24-5.That's in upset in my book.

Umm, Cumberland is 0-2 against Bell, couldn't beat Corbin AT Corbin, where the region is being played and would be a 20-point underdog to South Laurel if they played ...

You can never win an argument about what "could have, should have" happened after you lose by 18.

 

Corbin could just as easily say that if we played as good defensively in the first half as we did the second half, we could win by 30.

 

The score is what the scoreboard says it is.

I was just sayin that they didn't get all the attention that Corbin's class of 03 got due to their middle school success even though Cumberland was undefeated their 8th grade year I know of. The title game vs. Rock was most definately an upset but just basing it on talent, it was a pretty fair fight. However, Cumberland didn't decide to play to their talent thus making it an upset.

 

As for the topic, again, I like the rankings this week. I feel Corbin is a little better than Clay but would still like to see Clay ranked 3 and Corbin for for motivation tomorrow night. Regardless, we'll find out tomorrow. It should be a good one.

I wasnt very impressed with Cumberland when I saw them at clay, I just watched the first half and they did not look like a top 5 team...

I agree ... I know they've beaten B'ville twice, but I don't know if they could beat Phipps' squad a third time.

Off the subject,but since Corbin hosts the region this year wouldn't Cumberland be the host next year?I don't think it would be at Cumberland because of capacity,but would Cumberland be the host and hold it at Cawood?
