Russell 28 Greenup County 15

This one had to feel good for Russell. Hadn't beaten Greenup in four years before last night.

Jayden Frasure has played at a high level through two weeks. A perfect 10/10 last night with a couple of touchdown passes.

The defense was up to the challenge again. They'll only get better as the season goes on and everyone gets healthy.

There's a lot to like about this Greenup team. They've got some athletes and they're tough in the box. Like Russell, there's not a ton of size on the lines, but they get after you. Russell struggled to run the ball aside from some designed quarterback keepers.

There are some difficult games on the schedule and a few tricky ones that could go either way, but the Musketeers have some good pieces to work with.

Frasure played a very well managed game aside from the strip sack to start the second half. With a 21-0 halftime deficit for the Musketeers, they showed a lot of battle in their young team "winning" the second half 15-7. When Benge returns for the Devils, they can make an explosive run throughout the rest of the year. I personally do not see the Devils losing another game in the regular season aside from the Ashland game. Russell's defense is stout and held up a pretty physical Musketeer OL. GC struggled to get any momentum in the first half on offense and their defense played very well in the second half. The Musketeers have a tougher schedule this year than the Devils in large part due to their district.

Really nice game by the Devils and the Musketeers learned a lot about themselves from this game.

A big win for Russell, and some heavy positives both teams. As mentioned above, Frasure continues to impress. He just looks so comfortable in the pocket and hits his receivers in stride. It was a defensive back and forth early until Russell hit Cayden Pennington deep on third and long. That, I felt like, was a huge play that opened the game up early. If you're Russell, you have to be pleased that the team is giving this kind of response without Benge. The run wasn't there all evening, but they went against a pretty solid run defense. This put more pressure on Frasure to deliver and he went above and beyond when it came to delivering. Does anybody know of games where a QB has completed 100% throwing 10 or passes?

Regarding Greenup County, you never want to lose but this truly tells me the positives of where they are at as a program - that they are going in the right direction. Losing the talent they did last year, would have been a big setback for their program normally. For Greenup County, I compare this year to 2020 with East Carter. The prior year under Tim Champlin, East Carter went 7-4 and made the playoffs on one of the best seasons in school history. They lost a lot, and ended up going 4-3 in the COVID year, hanging around with Russell for a while in the first round of the playoffs - a Russell team that finished the season ranked #3 in 3A in the RPI and rightfully so. This year Greenup County had a couple of key injuries to further complicate the start to their season, but responded by picking up a good win against Pike County Central and being competitive with Russell.

Russell has West Carter next on the road and Greenup County travels to Portsmouth. All the best to both teams.

Did Frasure start last year for Russell?

He got some reps at QB but was mostly part of the running back rotation to begin the year. He missed several weeks with an injury before returning to the line up late in the season.

This was a slug fest. I like the natural grass.
