Some still think they throw too much, but Corbin does not have any backs like Matt Bargo, etc who went through the system during that time. The Madison Southern playoff loss was the beginning of the end for Coach Whitaker, a game that he probably "out-thought" himself and it resulted in a bitter loss for a very talented team. I have no idea if the rumors regarding Whitaker had any basis or not, but they played into his leaving.

 

One thing that must be pointed out was that during the Whitaker era Corbin had to face off against the district that included Danville, Boyle Co., Lexington Catholic, Madison Southern & Bourbon Co. in the playoffs and had teams such as Rockcastle Co. and Somerset in their district.

 

 

Not to be splitting hairs here folks but, one of the reasons why I like this site is because 11 year old information can become relavant again.

 

The 1996 playoffs featured this set up for 2A Districts 5 and 6.

FIRST ROUND:

#1 Corbin vs. #4 Mercer = Corbin in a blowout.

#2 Rock vs. # 3 Boyle Co = Boyle in a mild upset.

#3 Madison Southern vs. #2 Anderson County = Southern with good win .

#4 Wayne Co. vs. #1 Danville = Danville in a solid win.

 

SECOND ROUND:

#3 Boyle Co Defeats #1 Danville 12-0

#3 Madison Southern Defeats #1 Corbin in an Overtime Thriller 28-27. Corbin was in fact a very very good team, but caught an extremely athletic Southern team who were peaking at the right time.

 

Region Finals at Madison Southern:

Boyle County beat Southern 29-28 in a Great game. Probably the biggest game ever held at Madison Southern.

 

Boyle would go on to lose 12-7 the next week to Breathitt County who would go on to beat Fort Knox in the State Finals completing their Undeafeted Championship run.

 

At any rate with respect to the Powell County folks who are watching this thread and wanting to know more about the hiring process of their new Head Coach, I personally hope that who ever the administration brings in that they support the program properly. That will be the key whoever gets this job.

Powell Co. Administration does not have a good track record of showing much support. I thought that Tom Posey had that program headed in the right direction and he was let go. They had that guy from Virginia or West Virginia and he lasted 2 days before he got out. We will just have to wait and see? :confused:

 

Also have to question the comittment of the players at Powell Co. If you want something bad enough you can make it happen.
