Great game by the Colonels. Also, great tourney. Colonels showed what they can do, and that they are for real. Also, they were playing without arguably the best player in the 9th region. I hope to see them deep in the state tourney, and their student section.

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - Heading into Saturday night's Toyota Classic Championship game against Scott County, Covington Catholic coach Mike Listerman thought his team could play with Kentucky's top-ranked team.

 

Now he knows.

 

CovCath, ranked No. 1 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, played evenly with Scott County, ranked No. 1 in the state, throughout the first half, and rallied from a 15-point deficit in the second, but Scott County's perimeter shooting duo of Bud Mackey and Matt Walls proved to be too strong, as the Cardinals held on for a 63-58 win.

 

Despite the result, Listerman was proud of his team.

 

"We're disappointed, but not down in any fashion," he said. "I love this group. They play so hard. They never quit, and that's why they came back."

 

The Colonels (15-5) cut the lead to five with 15 seconds to play and quickly got the ball back on a Scott County turnover. Scott County (18-1) clinched the victory only when a Kurt Bovard 3-pointer - which would have narrowed the lead to two - rimmed out with six seconds left.
