Notes

-Though I remain supremely confident that we'll be raising them up quickly next month, we have to take Warren Central as they are right now, and not who they will be.  And who they are right now is a team nowhere near the top of the region, and the ranking drop reflects that.  The Dragons have opened 0-2 for the first time in nine years, snapping their 27 game overall winning streak, and then their 23 game region winning streak.  This week they'll try to get back on track, putting their 19 game home win streak on the line.

-Several teams at the top dropped games last week, but one that didn't is heavy preseason favorite Bowling Green.  The Purples looked the part in knocking off 1st Region #2 Calloway County by a 75-54 score.  MJ Wardlow dropped 34 pts on 15/23 shooting with 9 rebounds and 5 assists in the game to earn MVP honors.  The Purples were missing several players that were winning a state title in football on the same day, including Deuce Bailey, who will be a significant contributor and starter.  If this is how good they are shorthanded.....

-Glasgow got off to a hot start, taking a pair of region games from Logan County and Greenwood.  The Scotties dropped their first four a year ago, so a very needed strong start for them.  John Carter Walbert has averaged 19 points a game, including dropping in 5 of 10 threes so far.  The win over Logan County earned them a visit to district rival Warren East for a 2A sectional matchup this Tuesday.

-Russell County pulled off a rarity in taking two games from 14th District teams this week.  They knocked off Greenwood on the road in their season opener before beating Warren Central for the first time since their huge upset in the 2009 region tournament.  The Lakers averaged 50% shooting from the floor in the two victories, with Brayon Cerrato averaging 19 per game, one of four double digit scorers to this point.  The Lakers have been adrift for several years, failing to make the region tournament since 2018.  Perhaps this is a sign they're ready to get into the mix again.

-The "best" start in the region belongs to Monroe County, who won a trio of games from 13th District opponents, defeating Logan County by 15, Franklin-Simpson by 10, and Russellville by 2.  Branson Williams (19 PPG, 63.2% shooting) and Austen Arnett (17 PPG, 50.0% shooting) have led the way for the Falcons, who will follow up that start with a pair of critical district games at Clinton County and home against Cumberland County, before completing their trip through the 13th with a home matchup with Todd County Central this week.

-The 16th District will see four of their five teams in district action this week, with Clinton County, Cumberland County, Monroe County, and Metcalfe County all getting in two district matchups.  Those are the most impactful games of the week, with that Clinton County/Monroe County game serving as the marquee game for rankings, followed by a district matchup between Barren County and Warren East.  Also keep an eye on Bowling Green visiting Glasgow, the first region test for the favorite.  They've won 10 in a row over the Scotties, and haven't lost to their ancient rival in 15 years.

Terrific write up as always @DragonFire!

I'm curious to see how BG does against a good ETown team tomorrow and then a good Glasgow team later this week.

The Dragons will regroup once they get their players healthy again.  Both BG games will be a battle as usual..

Thx for the writeups on Russell County and Monroe County.  Good to hear they are doing well.

Also wondering how long it will be before the football Purples join the basketball team?

I would guess by King of the Bluegrass, but not really sure.

I'd be stunned if it wasn't by the KOB.  I feel like it's often within a week of the end of the football season. Deuce missed the first game after the state finals last year but played in the next game.  I would expect the same this time.

Just don’t think anyone in this region can beat BG this year.

Can will do a lot of heavy lifting with that word.  I will say that I don't think anyone should and I also don't think anyone will

I'll also say that if something were to happen to Ritter, then it would change a lot of calculus.  He's a guy that no one has an answer for.  Wardlow is a beast too, but you can find ways to slow down a guard.  It's going to be tough to match body for body with Ritter.

I heard Etown has a good post player. I think his name was Evans.
