District to Region - Who has the toughest path?

Featured Replies

? ? The second season began yesterday in the 16th, 22nd, and 27th Districts. Much of the Bluegrass starts in earnest tonight.

✅ I'm most familiar with the 9th Region, and have a fairly good take with what will happen in the 33rd - 36th.

? I've read some great weekly "Region Reviews" by our crack BGP team of contributors. I'm aware of some super competitive Districts in the 6th, 8th, and 12th Regions, where some very good teams (some ranked or previously so) will be watching from the stands after Round 1.

❓ What other teams, from around the Commonwealth, will run through a District guantlet to reach the final and advance to Regionals? Are there old school rivalries, where on any given day ... ? Is a team hampered by the injury bug? Is a District so balanced that it's a dart board throw to pick a winner? Thanking all in advance! ?

Great question.

Doss is already out. But regardless of chances to win, the Dragons had one of the most impossible paths. They drew 19-11 Iroquois for the 22nd District opener, and they lost by just two. Had they won, they had 20-8 Butler waiting in the semifinals and either 21-7 Western or 18-10 DeSales waiting in the district final. Possibly waiting in the Sixth Region tournament would be Evangel Christian, Pleasure Ridge Park, Fairdale and Lou. Holy Cross. With Doss out, Iroquois has that gauntlet waiting now.

This doesn't necessarily include having the toughest path, but Collins is currently ranked #17 in the state (they have been as high as #10 this season), ranked #2 in the region all year (outside of this week, where Grant County jumped above them) and somehow obtained the #4 seed in their district.

Can anyone name a better #4 seed in a district outside of Collins?

In the 22 District, DeSales plays Western (whom the Colts defeated at home by 22 points on Jan 24), but Western has won the last 6 in a row including wins over Seneca 71-53, Butler 84-76, Fern Creek 71-49, and PRP 57-51 on Feb. 17th.  They are hot right now.  The Colts have come out of a 3-game slump to get 3 season-closing wins against Fern Creek 59-55, St. X 65-57, and Bullitt East 67-56.  Even if DeSales can pull off another win against a Western team that is bent on revenge, their next opponent would most likely be Butler (if they can handle Iroquois) and Butler gave the Colts fits in their last meeting at Butler, handing the Colts a 68-48 loss.  Then the winner would most likely have to face either PRP or Evangel Christian in the Regional.  Whew!  Whoever wins tomorrow's game will still have quite a tough row to hoe in order to make it to Rupp!  I'm pulling for the Colts, but they really have a lot of work to do. If they can improve their 3-point shooting & free throw shooting, then I think they have a puncher's chance. Should be fun to watch.

Nope. Good point...

Whew doggies, that is tough. This was one of the Districts I was thinking of in the OP.

Congrats to Crew Gibson on his commit to Indiana Tech!

Anyone in the 45th district out of Region 12 is going to be in a dog fight to make it to region. A team (DCA) that upset top 20 ranked Evangel Christian is ranked 4th in the 45th district out of 6 teams. According to the BGP weekly rankings, 4 out of the 6 teams in this district are ranked in the top 7 of the entire region.

DCA got eliminated last night by Danville (#5 or 6,I can't remember right off, in BGP weekly rankings for R12), and Danville now plays #1 seed Lincoln County (#1 in BGP weekly ranking for R12), where Danville beat Lincoln on their floor only 2 weeks ago. District is being held at Lincoln.

On the other side, Garrard County and Boyle County (#3 in BGP weekly ranking for R12) match-up in the 2/3 game of the district tournament. In the two in-season games, both games were decided by a combined 4 points. Arguably Boyle's best player, who left Garrard County where he was also a standout basketball player, last season.

Should be fun!

Spencer County being the 1 seed in the 30th district, yet having to beat a top 15/20 team in the state in Collins in order to even make their region tournament, seems like the clear answer here.
