What is too much Practice?

This model worked well for us at Mason County. We never won a state title, but we got to the semifinals twice, quarterfinals 5 times, and made significant improvement in the quality of football.

July 10 through the end of school: Everyone in the weightroom, regardless of what sport you played.  All guys grades 9 thru 11 were in weightclass.  It was crazy good. At the end of my 19 years, we had them come in June, but in retrospect, that was a mistake. Our guys were always fresher and eager to start July 10 when they had that time off. When we added the June stuff, it was not the same.

Playing a sport in the offseason, play that sport. When your kids are playing for guys like Kelly Wells, Chris O'Hearn, Chris Ullery, Mark Kachler, Larry Harris, etc.... you know they are being coached and held to a high standard. And, other than an hour with me in the weightroom, it was good for them to have a break from me.

Not playing a sport, attend extra workouts to work fundamentals and improve, but not a bunch of it.  We worked like crazy in spring football to address what needed to be addressed and since we were full gear everyday, we got a lot done.  We could also steal time here and there in weightclass to work a little football as needed.

Spring practice was immediately after basketball season. We had all track guys and some baseball guys. When spring football ended, AAU got cranked up for our elite basketball guys(who were always at spring football). I told them go have fun and I will see you at the end of July. Spring football was always the toughest time for our freshmen. It was the first time being with the varsity guys. If they could survive 10 days in pads with the older kids, they usually made it. Spring of their freshman year is when most guys figured out if HS football was for them, or not.

Also, I have a ton of respect for the coaches, players and programs that get this done without inschool weightclass.  I don't know how they get it all done.

I saw some earlier references to Highlands and their offseason program/expectations. Bob Sphire is a seasoned veteran when it comes to running a program, winning championships, and working with multi-sport athletes. He is an excellent coach and leader. It's always an adjustment when you get use to a new leader at a high profile place like Highlands. But, they have some big numbers with the incoming freshman class and the returning HS guys are working. Awful good days are ahead for the Bluebirds!
