I've always done a quick shovel once a couple inches get down, even if it's still snowing. Usually it's really quick and easy...you don't even have to really shovel, you can usually just push it off. I don't have a huge driveway, and with three cars parked in it, there's not a ton of empty space to fill up with snow, so that first shovel (which was mostly sleet) only took about 15 minutes. We also threw down some ice melt after that first quick shovel and ended up with very little ice to deal with when it was all said and done.
