I thought it was remarkably organized for as many kids as they had. I especially liked the confrence that coach Cohen had with the boys telling them what to expect when they got to college. They even had a siminar on how to structure your classes for in season and off season. I think the kids got a lot from that.

 

The Nutter Center is a terrific facility where they got a lot of work done in a short period of time. The one thing I noticed that supprised me was that the pitchers and catchers groupes long tossed before their drills but the infielders group did not...and their throws accross the diamond were horrible as a group.

 

Other then that I think it was one of the best camps that we attended this year

I had to work, so my wife took my son down. She was impressed with it but really had no I idea how those things work. Were there many coaches there?

They were well staffed as far as having instructors at every station or drill.

 

As far as coaches scouting for players, I would guess that there were 25 college coaches there.

There were some things I liked about this camp, but there were a few things I found to be a disappointment.

First, there was only one pro scout there (Cleveland Indians) to assist with the training and instruction. Other camps I have been to have numbered around 6 to 8.

Second, a large majority of the instructors were current players from UK and other neighboring programs (Transy, Georgetown, etc.). This did give them a better instructor to camper ratio, but I'd rather have quality over quantity any day.

Third, not much parental education of NCAA rules and regs nor the UK coaching philosophy. They gave this some attention directly to the kids in the camp but nothing directly addressing the parents.

 

Overall it was a good camp but I have seen other Christmas camps that were better.

I know Coach Cohen and his staff take great pride in conducting camps for the state of Ky. They feel that Kentucky has many baseball prospects and should do everything they can not only to support the state but to promote the hometown kids, and it shows..

Is this why his first 9 signees for next season are from outside the state of KY?

It's my understanding from speaking to many of them they don't get paid by the university / coach they are helping. They are paid by their home clubs to find talent. So they attend camps to help out head coaches and search for talent. Some of them also are there to promote a product they developed or book they have written as there payment.

You are correct and language changes, are more strict on what College Baseball programs can do. Showcase will no longer be used, in the name of the camp

 

Where can I find information on this camp for next year?

They have spring and summer camps, but winter won't be available till around October. I've been to several of UK's camps and Cohen, Henderson and Mark Blythe, do an outstanding job and get a great turn out.
