AP Mr. Football: All-Time Finalists & Winners (Award Now Defunct)

Admittedly I'm a little confused by the lists of finalists put out year to year for KFCA's Mr. Football award, as I mentioned in @DevilMayCare's  final Mr. Football Watchlist thread of the season last year.

When the KFCA announced they were going to create their own Mr. Football Award back in the fall of 2018 they never came out and gave their list of criteria for coming up with finalists to vote on for the award, and that admittedly concerned me a bit. Even though the nominating and voting criteria were long forgotten over the course of time, the Associated Press did publish a list of criteria for selecting their finalists and for voting requirements back in 1987, prior to naming their first Mr. Football winner: AP Mr. Football Nomination/Voting Criteria.

So then a year or two after the KFCA started their Mr. Football Award, the KFCA did come out and tell the Herald-Leader that all players winning district and class player of the year awards were finalists for the award. I realize that sometimes there are underclassmen who win the KFCA district and class POY awards, and that means those players wouldn't be eligible as Mr. Football finalists since it's a senior-only award....but looking at the KFCA-publicized lists of Mr. Football finalists from previous seasons, they definitely left plenty of senior POY winners from the district level out of their finalists for Mr. Football. So the "all district and class POY winners" thing doesn't seem to hold water.

There was no list of finalists formally published by the KFCA for the 2022 season, which Travis Egan won, and I've since been told by three voting coaches that the list was made up of the class-level POY winners, so with two of those players being juniors last year, and thereby ineligible for Mr. Football voting, I guess that means the coaches were voting on Mr. Football from among 4 players last year.

Then this year we were back up to having 9 players on the KFCA's list of Mr. Football finalists, so obviously they're including more than just their class POY winners as finalists. And again we're missing quite a few senior POY winners from the district level. So it would appear that the KFCA's criteria for Mr. Football finalists has changed once again.

I voiced my concern about the new award back in 2018 in the A New Mr. Football Award for Kentucky?thread when I said, "I'd like to see some more info to prove to me that this isn't just going to be another cluster/popularity contest/homer vote like the Associated Press' Mr. Football Award has appeared to become," and I'll be honest, I'm disappointed that I think that's even more of a concern for me now than it was back then.
