Kentucky Paul Hornung Award: All-Time Winners

Featured Replies

The award is presented each year by the members of the Louisville Quarterback Club. Originally formed in 1938 by longtime Courier-Journal sports editor Earl Ruby with the backing of football alumni organizations from UK, UofL and Centre, the club was originally named the Kentuckiana Downtown Quarterbacks Club. The phrase "downtown quarterback" was a colloquialism used by Ruby for football fans who liked to chatter and "quarterback" games from the stands or from the comfort of their chair at home as they read the newspaper, and the club he organized was originally formed through an open invitation to anyone considering themselves a "downtown quarterback" in the Kentuckiana vicinity. The club would hold monthly huddles (meetings) at the cost of 50 cents for attendance, featuring one or two keynote speakers who were oftentimes members of the football coaching staffs at Centre, UofL, or UK.

Because the club was only sponsored by football alumni organizations from colleges in Kentucky, the club name was changed to the Louisville Downtown Quarterbacks Club two years after its creation. The club's name was changed again to the "Louisville Quarterbacks Club" in the 1960s after Earl Ruby's "downtown quarterback" colloquialism fell out of use.

Earl Ruby is also responsible for founding the Kentucky Derby Festival and the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame.
