Co-Champs!!

Featured Replies

Two of the Georgia State Finals games ended in ties. GHSA has no tiebreaker or overtime for state title games in football, so both teams are declared co-champions.

This happened in 1971 in the 3A title game in Kentucky, when Flaget and Thomas Jefferson tied 7-7 and were co-champs.

And because of that, both schools were later disbanded and closed. ;)

A tie is like kissing your sister.

Were you there? There was one of the more funny stories ever surrounding the trophy presentation at the "tied" game. As I understand it, there was of course, a winner and runner-up trophy ready to present. Since they now needed to give two winner's trophies, it was decided that they would flip a coin. The winner got that trophy, the loser of the toss would have one ordered and sent to the school. So they flipped a coin and gave it to one of the teams. The other team's fans about broke out in a riot thinking that the state title was decided by a coin flip.

Wow!! The GHSAA needs to make a ruling about overtime in state finals. To have Co-champs in HS football is crazy especially since it's decided by one game and not a few like college. This needs to be changed.

Indeed, it was poorly handled. (The KHSAA-I'm shocked, shocked!!!!). TJ got the trophy, and later Flaget got a duplicate. As noted tongue in cheek by HHSDad, "And because of that, both schools were later disbanded and closed." Well.... crazier things have happened.:D

Poorly handled? Just what was poorly handled out of curiousity? I suppose you think that there should have been a tiebreaker in place or a spare copy of all trophies? Just wondering how it was poorly handled. It was the first final I ever went to and I just remember how the fans from one of the schools grossly overreacted and frankly acted like a bunch of fools when no one could have anticipate a tie game.
