Both of these teams have encountered COVID throughout the season including last week when Nicholas County got a win by virtue of COVID over Bishop Brossart.  Williamsburg had four regular season games canceled due to COVID policy issues.  Both teams have persevered and overcome to get to this stage of the playoffs.

Williamsburg features its high powered offense led by QB Sydney Bowen and the #1 WR in 1A, Gavon Thomas. Thomas averages 134 yards receiving per game and also leads 1A receivers with 13 touchdowns. Bowen is working his way into Coach Herron's quarterback friendly offense as a first year starter. He has thrown for 17 touchdowns versus only 3 interceptions. However, Bowen is completing less than 50% of his passes. He is also the leading rusher for the Yellow Jackets.

Nicholas County runs the ball twice as much as they throw it and finished the regular season #3 in 1A in rushing offense. The Bluejackets are led by running backs Seth Tincher and Spencer Neace. Both have 9 rushing touchdowns. The key for the Bluejackets' upset hopes will be their defense. They have done a nice job forcing fumbles and interceptions. If they can get a couple turnovers, that will give them a chance.

Williamsburg has made it back to the regional finals again. They lost a heartbreaker last season to Paintsville 36-34. This time Williamsburg has a more winnable game than last year. They will welcome in Nicholas County who got a round 2 forfeit thanks to COVID.

Williamsburg struggled to find games this season, but they have played a total of 7 games and have averaged scoring about 35 points per game and given up almost 19 points per game. Nicholas County comes into this game averaging 34 points per game and giving up almost 13 points per game. Who wins this regional matchup? Does Williamsburg reach its first state semifinal since 2014? Does Nicholas County come into Williamsburg and steal one?

The door is opening for a potential state final appearance for Williamsburg. I’m not sure anyone expected that when they were having games canceled almost weekly due to Covid. But it says a lot about the fantastic job Jerry Herron does every year at Williamsburg.
