Isolated storms possible overnight WKY (4/28/2020)

Featured Replies

The Storm Prediction Center has portions of western Kentucky in a category 1 Marginal Risk Area for mainly tonight into the early morning hours on Wednesday. The best chance for western Kentucky to see the possible storms is around 2 am EDT. Damaging winds and possible some hail are expected to be the primary severe weather threats. While the threat for tornadoes is low a tornado or two cannot be ruled out. Torrential rainfall with localized flooding will also be possible in the stronger storms.

The NAM 3km radar simulation is from 2 am to 11 am EDT Wednesday. Note the individual cells popping up in western Kentucky before the mainline enters. These are to ones that could be strong enough to spawn a quick spin-up tornado.

I will update later today.

@nWo I can honestly say, in my 52 years of watching/reading/listening to forecasts, I've never heard the term "Fire Hose Effect".

'Fire hose effect' may trigger flooding in Northeast

I'm assuming that's not a technical meteorological term. :lol2:

I've never heard it either but what I've found out they are talking about a large amount of rain accumulations in a very short period.

The Storm Prediction Center has extended the category 2 Slight Risk Area into far western Kentucky. The Marginal Risk Area has also be extended eastward.

Showers should start in western Kentucky around 12 AM EDT with the severe weather breaking out around 1 AM EDT. The severe threats look to be damaging winds, frequent cloud to ground lighting, hail and torrential downpours in the strongest storms. The tornado threat has increased some especially west of the Land between the Lakes area. The individual cells out in front of the main line of storms could produce tornadoes.

I'll be updating later this evening.

There is still a chance for thunderstorms this evening for western Kentucky. Mainly during the overnight and early morning hours. Severe thunderstorms are possible with damaging winds and large hail. Torrential rainfall may also lead to some localized flash flooding risk with any training of storms. It appears that the tornado chance has diminished but it is still not zero. There has been no change in the timing from my last post. Those in the affected areas should have a way to get severe weather alerts tonight about any impending severe storms in your area.
