It's easy to see why Holmes senior guard Austin Hill is puzzled by a glaring contradiction in the Northern Kentucky preseason boys' basketball rankings.

 

The Bulldogs have three of the top 10 players in Northern Kentucky, according to a list compiled by local coaches. Yet most of those coaches voted Covington Catholic No. 1 and Holmes No. 2 in the team rankings.

"It's hard to believe we've got four of the top players and we're not No. 1," Hill said. "We had a discussion about that in the locker room the other day. Coach (David) Hensley said everybody thinks we're a bunch of individuals and we're not going to make it downstate as a team. I guess we'll just have to prove everybody wrong."

Holmes played much better team ball last night against PC, If they play as a team they will hush the critics and have a good chance to win the region. If Duran was not hurt and out for most of the season, Holmes would have been ranked 1 for sure IMO.

The only question mark about Holmes is can they maintain that team chemistry thru a whole season. I don't think anyone would deny they have more talent than anyone in the region, but everyone is just waiting for that on court/off court distraction that causes them to implode.

 

I think they have the talent to make a run deep into the State Tourney but....can they hold things together for an entire season?

The key to Holmes will be if BReon Avery can provide good guard play while Duran is out. They also will need some of the key reserves to step up for them and gain experience as Cov Cath seems to be very deep with talent.

Avery will be fine he handles the rock well, distributes the ball and can deffend. He is not needed to score as much with Rice, Hill and Henderson. He has shown that if needed he can score as well, but his main job is to keep the flow moving.
