The 14th regional tournament is going to be fun this year. There’s no dominant team. Breathitt County has a team that could do it but the right Bobcats team has to show up and not the one that occasionally lays an egg.

Knott County Central Perry County Central, Hazard, Breathitt County, Letcher County Central.....any of these could get hot and win it. But their reward is a first round matchup with the 6th region’s mostly Jefferson County schools. That game may get ugly quickly but at least one of the 14th teams can hang a regional banner in their gym. Thinking of a state title is hopeful wishing only, with the last 14th region team to win the championship was the back-to-back titles by Hazard in 1955 and Carr Creek in 1956.

In Breathitt County’s situation they haven’t won it since 1996. Letcher County Central hasn’t won the region since they consolidated Whitesburg, Letcher High and Fleming Neon about 10 years ago.

This year’s tournament should be entertaining, and it’s on about as neutral a court as possible, at Powell County.

Pelfrey and Bennett back for the Dawgs in this one. Breathitt led 90% of the game, including a double digit lead in the second half. Nice fight in the Dawgs to get the win.
