Maher Rankings: Calvary Christian Girls' Soccer???

Featured Replies

Can someone help me understand something... It is very possible I'm missing something here...

Calvary Christian Girls' Soccer is currently ranked #92 in the Maher Rankings. That might be a normal average ranking for CCS soccer this time of year... but I don't understand the rationale for the placement. Anyone help?

- Currently 7-0

- 33 Goals for, ZERO goals against

- Only team in the state who still hasn't been scored on

- Beat Campbell County 1-0 (currently ranked #65...higher than CCS)

- Beat Villa Madonna 2-0 (currently ranked #90... higher than CCS)

- Beat Sayre 2-0 (currently ranked #97)

- Beat Muhlenberg County 7-0 (currently ranked #117)

- Top record in Region X

I'm not ranting, I just don't get it :)

Computer rankings are still heavily weighted based on last year, give it two more weeks and they will be fairly accurate. Keep in mind Campbell Co is 1-6, so that win may not be a big help. Schedule strength is 645, that is really hurting current ranking.

Calvary is having a great year. Not sure if they play any top 50 teams, one of those wins will move them up quickly.

That makes sense for the time being. Just didnt understand beating 2 opponents higher ranked and still being in the 90s.

Make it 8-0 after the win last night...

Calvary: 6

Mason Co: 0

I believe there still going off last year results they have st Henry ranked higher than ncc and ncc just beat them. I’d give it a couple more weeks

I agree with some of the above stated rational.

Just as teams which might not be as good presently as in the past, still maintain a bit of that past respect in the rankings, so too do teams which are not traditionally successful under-weighted in the rankings until they can earn that respect.

This Saturday Calvary will have the chance to advance to the "A" State Tournament in Frankfort, should they be able to defeat Brossart in the 10th Region finals and NCC ( I think) in the semi-state qualifier.

IF they are able to achieve those accomplishments, they will move up substantially in the rankings.

That makes perfect sense to me. Just surprised to see a team with a 39-0 goal differential not getting more buzz. This weekend should be a very good indicator of where they're at... not mention, with Campbell down, that game could show who the favorite is in the 37th district.

I think what Maher does is a very statistically valid approach to rankings. Best we have. But take them with a grain of salt. Designing an objective measurable approach for subjective qualities is difficult. At best they provide an idea of the level of your competition but more often they create a false sense of accomplishment. Teams and coaches that are often at the top of the rankings tend to blow them off and teams working their way up tend to put too much emphasis on them.

What really matters is that Calvary is having a great year compared to its history and expectations. Enjoy it!

Beating teams in the 100s doesn't really help rankings, regardless of score. Win against teams in the 50s-70s and Calvary will move to the top of that range. They are probably about 20 spots too low right now. Is Calvary better than schools like Conner, Cooper and Scott? No idea and neither does a computer yet. Scott beat Campbell by the same score as Calvary and beat Villa by more than Calvary. Scott lost to Conner and Cooper.

Single games are not always apples to apples but you start to see how the Maher rankings become more reliable after 10-12 games vs 6-7 games when you can have all kinds of outlier results. At the end of the day none of it matters right now and will be sorted out over time on the field.

I think you are putting too much emphasis on the goal differential, don't get me wrong, those are some strong numbers. The current SOS is not working in your favor, upcoming matches will help this number. Another thing to look at are games you "should" win. In terms of the Maher Rankings, if you were only favored to beat Mason Co. by a couple of goals, the result the other day will help you in their rankings.

Beat a few teams that are ranked higher than you and I think you will start seeing the rankings closer to what your expectations are.

Yeah again, all that makes sense. The fact is it just takes some more time for the dust of previous perceptions to settle. And I know goal differentiation isn't everything, but it does paint a picture.

My biggest confusion was simply seeing their resume as far superior to two teams ranked higher than them, who they actually beat (Campbell & Villa).

But like yall said... time will probably work it out. Another home game with Bourbon Co tonight won't exactly grow the resume, but the next couple of weeks should tell a lot.
