South Warren started the 2018 campaign off on the right track with a 49-17 win over 4A #5 Hopkinsville. The Spartans were led on offense by qb Gavin Spurrier with 170 yards completing 9 of his 14 passes. Warren Central has struggled to find their way in recent years, losing to Greenwood last week 6-28. What are your thoughts on this one?

This would be a great slot for the Spartans to step out and play and upper level team.

Warren Central just can't provide much resistence against a very good South team right now.

I agree with you P88 but where the problem came is due to the Citizens First Bowl with all county teams playing each other on this night.

South has to play Greenwood in the district so that left was and Central and since Greenwood plays central on their schedule that left the match up to be South and Central nd Greenwood playing East.

Both games are at WKU.

Now what I think is it is going to be a quick game and Souths starters will exit in the second quarter. I hope central can make it a better game but I just don’t see it happening right now.

Did we travel back in time to 2012? No? Well then South Warren is going to destroy Central with the greatest of ease. Running clock before the first quarter is over.

I believe the plan is next year to have South Warren play Warren East in this bowl game while Warren Central and Greenwood shift their home and home into playing in the bowl game. East may not be a megaton leap up, but it will be a better game for South Warren. I think South Warren will stick with this bowl game for as long as they'll do it, but unless and until something changes with the glut of people flooding into South Warren's district via housing or transfer, they'll never get a competitive game in this bowl. They're just way too far above the rest of the county schools.

To JC's bolded point above, this is a good problem to have for the South Warren JV and Freshman as they should get a good run going. But this does little for the varsity guys.

To DFire's bolded point, why continue this series? I say that in all seriousness; not in a smart-elic sense. I love local rivalrys as much as anyone, but when there is a 100% known outcome a year out I just don't see ANY benefit from it and the only thing that can happen is JV guys get some time on the big field or you can get some injuries. Call me crazy...

Well, from that standpoint, why does Bowling Green continue to play Warren Central? They're on the schedule until 2020. I know their tradition reaches back a long time, but that game hasn't been in shouting distance of competitive in three seasons, and it's not going to improve any time soon. I consider it far more likely that Warren Central would close the gap with South Warren before they'd close it with Bowling Green, simply because dynamics within that school system can shift. Nothing changes with Bowling Green. I believe Bowling Green would still play Warren East if East would let it happen, and that's despite the fact that East didn't play Bowling Green within 18 points in the last 8 years of the series.

The answer to that and why South would continue the series is that there are other reasons aside from pure on-field product. For starters, money. Bowling Green/Warren Central draws even if it isn't THE game like it used to be. Citizens First pays money to each county school to play in this game. For South it's a paid practice. For Central, it's essentially the equivalent of an FCS squad getting paid to take a beating. Next year when they begin to play Greenwood, that'll even out for them. And again, East will give South a better game.

Secondly, and if this isn't a conscious thought on the side of South Warren then I'd be surprised, it's about a platform that allows them to demonstrate their clear dominance over their peers. Nothing sends a message of "come play for us, we're the only program that matters" like beating your nearest schools within an inch of their life. There's a reason South Warren wouldn't play Greenwood or Warren Central right away - they weren't certain they could beat them. Why give that ammunition to schools you're competing with for players? They played Warren East, a school that is isolated and isn't a threat to lose players to. When 2013 came around, they felt confident enough to step up. They didn't play Warren Central until they had to, at which point the tables had completely turned. And then once they left the district, they decided to continue that series. They are bordered by Greenwood and Warren Central's districts and many years they receive players from those areas. I'm betting the reverse isn't true nearly as often. This is the reason I tended to lay more blame at South Warren's feet when it came to the question of why they and Bowling Green didn't play. I'm sure both sides absorb responsibility, but I had already seen how South Warren tried to build their program. There isn't a Kentucky squad they've put on their schedule since the very first year that they weren't certain they had a near 50/50 chance or better of beating. And the squads they put on that first schedule that I say qualify for that year were Warren East and AC/S - both squads they knew they could compete with in the very, very near future. So that's what I see in it for South. Bowling Green has made a living on that for years. I've always suspected it is why every time they played a Warren County school Coach Wallace pulled out the stat of Bowling Green's record versus Warren County schools. It sent a clear, concise message, to be followed swiftly by a beating on the field.

If anything, my question is why does Warren Central allow themselves to get on the field with South Warren? Other than the money, I see no reason whatsoever. I would ice them out just as they iced us out before they got on the level. I was dismayed to learn we kept them on the schedule for 2019 & 2020 when it switches to a home and home.

Maybe one of your Top 10 Posts (although I'm partial to our October 2016 match of DL Moore vs Deangelo Wilson)! While I think BG plays WC out of respect for the rivalry, I'd be nieve to say that Coach Wallace did not poke the Warren County bear every chance he got. Fair play.

I think WCentral plays South because its a different mind frame there. Central is just looking to get games and keep the budget sheet nice. South has MUCH more strategy involved and I'd say all the original Warren Central top brass that moved to Greenwood to beat BG in sports have now all moved to South Warren.
