Second Region policy board nixes 7 man crews

Featured Replies

The policy board voted down giving the schools a choice to request and pay for 7 man crews this year. If a school wants it they can only pay what 5 officials would make for the game. This is real progress and at least two veteran officials have left the association over this. Does your Region allow 7 man crews?

Help us understand who is doing what?

Regions and Kentucky High School Football are not the same as Regions and Kentucky High School Basketball.

Second Region policy board voted to not allow their member schools to pay for 7 man crews this year for the regular season. If a Madisonville has a big game vs Henderson they will only be allowed to pay for a 5 man crew. How will these guys train for the playoffs nwhen the 7 man crews are mandated for all rounds except week one

1st and 2nd region share officials assigned by one person. 1st Region Policy board will pay full cost, minus $5 for a 7 man crew= $80/per. 2nd region policy board will pay only $61/per for a 7 man crew. Travel pay might be an issue for some driving 2 hours or more for a game in the 2nd region. An overwhelming majority of the officials said they would not officiate for $61. Assigner told 2nd region policy board he would not send 7 man crews to 2nd region schools who request 7 man crews. In order to officiate post season games past the first round you have to officiate a certain amount of games on a 7 man crew. Some 2nd region coaches are mad because they want 7 man crews. I think the state only requires $60/per. Policy boards can alter pay. You could argue any side of this and be right.

It is sad for the officials that want to advance and work deep into the playoffs. It should be up to each school to decide if they want to pay for the extra two officials and not let non football playing schools have a voice in the decision.

Either someone has to explain how this trickles down from the KHSAA into a specific Football Ref Association (and not a Region thing like hoops) or I am going to close the thread because it is too ambiguous.

The KHSAA does allow each policy board to set the amount of fees for each game. They only cover playoff games but the rules do allow a seven man crew if schools want it. This policy board is not allowing this and it will hamper assignments of playoff games for the officials as they have to do 7 man games during the season to be playoff eligible after the first round. I look for Tackett to get involved soon and help the officials out. It is a money issue and the smaller schools do not want to pay for 7 but also do not want the larger schools to have the option. Is this fair?

I know you are trying but it still doesn't make sense to me.

Anyone, how many different Kentucky High School Officials Associations are there?

Also, here is the current Master List of KHSAA High School Officials, I don't see anything about "regions" or "regional policy boards" here:

Current Football Officials | Kentucky High School Athletic Association

Also, here is a link from the NKOA which officiates games in the 8th, 9th, and 10th Regions. In other words, there is no "regional policy board" in NKY that I am aware of or that is listed on their site:

Welcome to the Central Hub of the Northern Kentucky Officials Association. Currently, the NKOA provides football officials for 29 member schools of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association. These schools include all football playing schools in the 9th region, eight schools in the 8th region and five schools in the 10th region. In addition, many members of the NKOA officiating in middle school, youth, and pee wee football leagues. Current and past members also officiate in the Southeastern, Ohio Valley, Great Lakes Valley, Heartland, and Mid-South conferences collegiately

ArbiterSports - Northern Kentucky Officials Association

There is an Officials Guidebook on KHSAA Ofiicials website that explains how an official has to be a member of a local association (might be limited to FB, VB, BK, BA, FP, SO) to officiate. Each association has a policy board and one thing they have is the ability to adjust pay. 1st and 2nd region have different policy boards but share officials and assigner for football.

In comparison, to officiate post season in basketball you have to officiate 8 girls varsity games and 8 boys varsity game amount other specifics. Football now requires you to officiate a set amount of 7 man crew games(I think 5) among other specifics. Well, if all crews in the 1st and 2nd region won’t officiate certain games for less money, some crews won’t quality to officiate past round one. It’s a money thing for certain schools and officials. AD’s at 2 schools in the 2nd are adamant against paying them more money. Does this help?

$140 bucks a game problem is what we're talking about here.

It is a shame that several non football playing schools were a major player in this decision
