I think the Fieldhouse has to be mentioned. You don't see it as much anymore. But for anyone who's seen it really rock, you know what I'm talking about. The building shakes. You can't hear the guy next to you on the bench. The dimensions are weird so it ice's your shooters a lot of the time. From the 80s on through a couple of years ago nobody wanted to play Mason at home.

Actually, that was the first round of the 13th Region Tournament back in 1998. I still remember interviewing Coach Mike Deaton giving me some quotes that I used for the story of that game. He said something in the nature that the foul call was a travesty to high school basketball, and no wonder they'd won more than 100 games in a row at home.

I remember the final seconds, Corbin scores and wins, the Corbin bench was celebrating and getting ready to shake hands, but there was the ref already signaling a foul. I will say this, Coach Keith wasn't 'stalking, ranting or raving' at the ref that made the call at the end of the game. Pretty sure he didn't have to. I didn't like the way that game ended and really didn't have a great liking of Coach Keith until I became friends with him about three years before his death. We would eat lunch together at least once a week, and to hear his stories, it was awesome. I finally got up the nerve to ask him about the ending of the Corbin game, and asked if he thought it was really a foul. He said, why heck yeah it was a foul. Then he smiled real big and gave me a wink. That was just one of MANY stories he told me.

The best environment I’ve ever been at was in The Fieldhouse many years ago for the regional tournament. Pretty sure Lofton was there. Unreal high school game atmosphere. Haven’t been to one that good since.
