Class 5A

 

South Warren has wanted a shot at Bowling Green since their school formed and finally got it Friday. After the Purples dominated the game they may be singing a different tune. Christian County and Covington Catholic are only one week away from a perfect record, they should both be substantial favorites in the finals. Madison Southern has been one of the most pleasant surprises in the Class. The Eagles put the finishing touches on a District Title against Anderson County, but get an extremely stiff test against 4A's new #1 team Wayne County.

3. Christian County at 3A Paducah Tilghman

4. South Oldham vs. 4A Shelby County

5. Madison Southern at 4A #1 Wayne County

6. South Warren at 2A Owensboro Catholic

7. Southwestern vs. 3A #7 Lexington Catholic

8. Doss at 6A North Hardin

9. Apollo vs. 6A Daviess County

10. Fern Creek -- OPEN

I am surprised Fern Creek has remained in the top ten. Other than a win against Manual (who is 3-6 but has played a brutal schedule) I've not seen anything about the Tigers that makes me think they are a top ten team. I think Highlands, Graves County, Montgomery County, and North Laurel all have arguments for being ranked higher.

I really feel like all of the teams you mentioned are pretty much on the same level and I would expect a close game if any of those five teams played each other. IMO there are two things to look at as far as Fern Creek goes, the win against Manual is still a win over a top ten 6A team, which none of the other teams can claim. Also with the exception of the 29-0 loss to Central, Fern Creeks losses have all be by a single score. Highlands can't say that, however Graves and Montgomery County's losses have all be close games as well. I really think you could draw straws to rank those four teams then stick North Laurel right behind them.

Purples finally got to do their thing vs the Spartans of South Warren last Friday night. Although it is just chatter that doesn't amount to anything, I am thankful that Coach Smith at South Warren told the Daily News (Bowling Green Newspaper) that it was him that kept pushing the game off between them and the Purples. There was some talk amongst some fans, pointing the finger to one another, of who would not play who. I can now admire and appreciate Coach Smith for knowing the vision he had for their program and sticking to his game plan of choosing not to play the Purples until he had to.

 

Although I bleed Purple and loved the outcome of the game between the two schools, I do think the Spartans and Purples could see each other again.

 

I don't think that Christian County offense is as quick as Purples offense. If South can hold on to the ball and keep Christian County offense off the field, I think South Warren will have the first major upset in class 5A in week 2 of playoffs.

 

We have a lot of ball to play before then and certainly a lot of ball to play until Lexington but I am hoping my young Purples team gets a shot at arguably the best team Covington Catholic has ever had. That game would be a lot of fun (and a lot of offense). Don't want to get ahead of myself too much but it is fun to think about!

Your Purples really impressed me Friday night! I really expected it to be a close game and wasn't so sure that South Warren couldn't pull off the upset. Show's how much I know lol. I really think at this point it's Cov Cath, Bowling Green and then everyone else in class 5A. The Purples have came a long way since the beginning of the season and like you said, the Colonles may have their best team in history. Everyone else in the class seems to be a few steps behind those two at this point.
