Class 5A

 

Two teams in last week’s Top 10 earned statement wins. Southwestern was starting to collect some doubt in voter’s eyes, but a victory over 6A Central Hardin in convincing fashion might have validated their standing. The only game featuring two ranked teams last week went the way of Christian County. The Colonels maintained a comfortable distance much of the game against Owensboro and improved to 6-0 entering a showdown with a surprisingly hot Apollo team. The biggest storyline this week involves the three other undefeated teams. Covington Catholic and South Warren each will get significant tests this week against out of State competition. Perry Central remains in the Bluegrass State, but will face their stiffest test of the year against a Whitley County team that needs to rebound from a loss to North Laurel. A game that may be off most people’s radars that might merit a much closer look is Madison Southern and Montgomery County squaring off for what might very well be the District 6 Championship.

Not sure I could vote for BC as of yet. I'll see them play Oldham County and South Oldham the next two weeks, so I'll be able to give you a pretty good feel for where I think they should be over the next two weeks...maybe I'll change my mind....but currently, with a loss at home to North Oldham on their resume, I'm afraid I can't pick them for the top 10 in 5A. North, a smaller (4A) school, was visiting BC and was riding a 17 game losing streak at the time. BC blew a ten point second half lead and lost in OT.

 

I think North Oldham is (dramatically) improving by leaps and bounds, and the Mustangs have now won two straight....but a top 10 5A school shouldn't have lost that game, IMO.

BC has lost to two decent teams and has beaten 4 teams with a combined record of 8-18. Their best win was the first week of the season when they Louisville Holy Cross 7-0. Not sure I would call that worthy of being ranked top 10 in 5A.

Highlands hater. Still thinks Walton Verona should be ranked ahead of Highlands in NKY Rankings.
