The HHS HC discussion got me to thinking about the responsibilities of Head Coach. Is it to just coach whoever walks in the door, or, is it to build a program which infers influence over who walks in the door.

 

By influencing who comes in the door, I mean generating enthusiasm in the community and by extension feeder programs. Does the varsity program engage the youth through camps, promotions and acknowledgements? Is this a reasonable expectation for a HC in exchange for compensation that does not pay a lot of the bills?

I don't know how coaches can do one without the other. Obviously they need to develop the talent that walks through the door, but also continue to do things that generate interest in the program.

The great ones do both, the good do 1 or the other and the bad ones do neither.
