Best Training/Nutrition Publications/Sites for High School Football Players

Featured Replies

I am a big believer in the science and research behind weight training/performance/nutrition for high school athletes, and I am always encouraging young men to read more and more about that research for training purposes, and how to prepare for peak physical performance by understanding the issues about rest, hydration, nutrition, strength training, plyometric training, and cardiovascular fitness.

What publicatons, blogs, and websites do your school/athlete follow for training purposes? What are the best?

Great question. Hopefully people in the know will share their knowledge.

The International Youth Conditioning Association (IYCA) is very good. Many of the top coaches in the country are associated with them.

International Youth Fitness Association - Athletic Development - IYCA

A good starting point for any program dealing with the youth population (HS athletes included) is some form a Block Zero program. A foundation program that lays a base for future development. Joe Kenn (Carolina Panthers, formerly of UofL) is a very good resource for this. Information on Block Zero and Long Term Athletic Development at the high school level can be found on his site, Big House Power

I agree with you. Heard Joe Kenn speak at the Hammer clinic in cincy this summer. Very knowledgeable and intense dude. Woke me up as it pertains to our S&C program.

I was there too. I've heard him speak many times. Very passionate.

Last April he put on a clinic in Texas directed at the HS strength coach. I believe he will be doing something similar again this year. If you can swing it I highly recommend it. He only charged $75 for the last one.

Probably the best readily available resource is the National High School Strength Coaches Association NHSSCA. They have a Facebook page where top coaches from around the country are constantly sharing ideas and information.

Thanks! I'll check it out. Don't know if I can swing texas with my amazing strength coach salary. Ha!

In years past he has done similar ones in Indy with Mike Robertson. They were far and away the best conferences and clinics I've ever attended.

Allison Mauer has a few good videos on youtube from when she was at the University of Tennessee. Try searching her name or "fueling Tennessee" on youtube.
