So is Smiths pitching what SL is depending on this year because, I haven't heard anything about the rest of the team...Its gonna take more than one good arm to win championships, don't you think?

 

South will be loaded this year, but Smith will anchor a very good pitching staff.

South Laurel has to be the favorite, but there are many dark horses in the 13th.

how about tolliver at Middlesboro, i had a chance to see him and the greer kid throw at E-town. Will Tolliver be one of the better pitchers in the region?

A lot of people will be surprised at how much arm strength Tolliver has picked up over the off-season. However, Middlesboro is pretty deep with pitching this year and Tolliver probably fits in to their rotation at about 4 or 5 to tell you the truth.

 

His future is at 3B. The kid was the best true hitter on Middlesboro's team last year and has only gotten better. He has a great build for the corner and is probably one of the hardest workers on the team.

I think Middlesboro stands a great chance at winning this region this year. Coach Sowders has a couple years of head coaching under his belt and actually has some depth and leadership to work with this season. I highly doubt that one pitcher in the region will be enough to keep them from winning it.

Is Powell still coaching

Yes he is an assistant coach for this team. However, Coach Sowders has the reigns now and this program is on his shoulders.

Whitley lost pretty much everything but Bowman. Everyone else is window dressing for last years team.

 

P-Jordan McCumbers----should be the #1 for them

C-Mark Comperoni----could be the best catcher around if he had any speed at all.

1B-Who knows their top two graduated.

2B-???? Rose. played some last year there but was shakey at best.

3B- Bowman (?)

SS- Bowman (?) could be Storms

LF--Graduated Sr last year WIDE open

CF--Graduated Sr last year Wide open but look for the Jones kid to make a run at it.

RF--Graduated Sr last year Wide open......

 

Looks like the Colonels will be looking for players, and heard through the grape vine, 4 or 5 players had shoulder surgury in the off season including the Storms kid.

 

John Smith is one of the top coaches in the area, but looks like this year he will really earn his money if they can win 15 games, in fact he should be coach of the year if they win that many.

You are right and they have done it without their best player...Mark Comperone....out with a shoulder injury. It shows just how good a coach John Smith is.

 

And it shows the rest of the region better be ready in the next couple of years.

Well Apex, looks like the Whitley Coach has earned that coach of the year status...Whitley County is now 16-9 if I'm not mistaken and, still have games to go...

 

I would have to give Stricklin from Williamsburg or the Harlan coach the nod as coach of the year in the 13th.

Isn't it funny how pre-season no one mentioned lil ol Williamsburg. Yet they have 18 wins, won the all a sectional, went back to Applebee's, split with South and split with Whitley,defeated M'boro, and sent a 17 - 2 paintsville team packing. Every one seemed to think Comporoni (Whitley) would be the catcher in this area, but anyone who has seen games in this region would have to say Root is far and away the best defensive catcher, and probably offensive as well. The kid has torn the cover off the ball lately. Will Moses is hands down the best outfielder I've seen, with the kid from South (Bubba...sorry can't think of his last name) being an extremely close second. Ryan Moses has been superb as a utility guy and his hitting the ball well as a Freshman (this kid has an extremely bright future). Witt and Shelly have been tough on the mound, and Witt has come up with several key hits. I would agree, Don Stricklin has pulled rabbit after rabbit out of his hat this year for this team to be where it is now. The administration at Williamsburg should give him a big raise, and he surely deserves Coach of the Year.

I guess that the big budget, huge coaches salary and the large volume of players to pick from would keep most from voting for Stricklin.:lol:

Stricklin has done a good job. I think most who know baseball figured the Jackets would be good this season.
