gold sunrise Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Defense wins games and GRC's was great tonight. Central never lead in the game. It was close the whole game with GRC extending the lead in the 4th quarter. Congrats Cards and coaching staff on a great win.

The Varsity had not defeated the Indians in 6 seasons when names such as Zollo, Stenzel, Rogers, Skinner, and Purvis carried the Cardinals to the Elite 8 in 2011. All 3 teams won by double digits over Madison Central. The Freshmen began the night with a victory, 50 to 40. The JV followed that with another win, 43 to 33. The Varsity completed the sweep with a much-needed signature win, 53 to 42. Varsity: GRC 53 Madison Central 42 GRC opened up with a, 5 to 2, lead early in the first quarter before Coach Feldhaus of Madison Central called a timeout to make adjustments. However, the Cards continued with their aggressive defensive strategy. GRC led after the first quarter, 12 to 8. The Indians came out strong in the 2nd quarter with a bucket and a three-pointer to take a brief lead, 13 to 12, with 6:20 remaining in the second quarter. The teams traded baskets for the remaining of the half. GRC led 21 to 19 at halftime. The Cardinals came out strong to begin the 3rd quarter and never trailed again. GRC had a 5-0 run that opened up into a 10-2 run to begin the half. The score was 31 to 21. However, Madison Central had its own run of 5-0 to cut the score to 31 to 26. Following a Coach Cook timeout, GRC had its own run of 5-0 to make the score, 36 to 26, with 2 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Madison Central had a run of 4-0 to finish the third quarter, 36 to 30. Madison Central pressed the Cardinals in the fourth quarter following a, 4 to 0, Cardinal run. With 6:35 remaining in regulation, the Cardinals called timeout during a press break. This left the Cardinals with only one time out for the remainder of the game. The Cardinals figured out the press while hitting their free throws down the stretch. Jordan Graham hit two free throws with 5:16 left to make the score, 44 to 34. A key play to extend the lead to 11 was Ryan Cooper’s mid-range jumper with 3 minutes remaining. This made the score, 50 to 39. More importantly, this gave the Cardinals a buffer to remain in the lead for the rest of the contest. The final score was 53 to 42. Some key team statistics from the contest are as follows: GRC had 24 rebounds. Madison Central had 23 rebounds. GRC had 12 turnovers. Madison Central had 18 turnovers. GRC had 15 assists. Madison Central had 13 assists. Here are the Cards individual statistics: Chase Taylor had 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists. Will Philpot had 12 points and 7 rebounds. Jordan Graham had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals. Ryan Cooper had 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. JJ Johnson had 5 points and 3 rebounds. Tydarius Clark had 4 points, 1 rebound, and 1 assist. PJ Williams had 1 assist. The Varsity (2-2) travels to Pendleton County on Friday, December 9th for a 7:30PM tip-off. I love that he/she includes the rebounds , steals and assists. Scoring isn't everything when it comes to playing basketball. A player can have a great game without scoring a point. Wish other teams would include this in their stats. :thumb:
