Open Job: Knox Central

Featured Replies

Someone is about to inherent a program in a pretty good spot already with an unbelievable wave of talent about to come up as Freshmen next year.

Knox is a speed training program away from being a perennial Top 10 or Top 5 program in their classification with the talent they have coming up and the size they are always able to put on the field.

If the Carton kid didn't get hurt and they had a couple more explosive play producers on Offense there is a strong chance they may be the team playing for the Regional Title tonight.

I don't think so but of course plenty of rumors going around.

I'm interested to see what it said in the paper considering it doesn't get printed until later tonight, and the story hasn't even been published yet? I know the Times-Tribune put a post out on Facebook and it was also on the 13th Region Football Facebook Group, but anyway, I talked to Scottie today along with Knox AD Jeffrey Canady and they'll be a story in the Times-Tribune tomorrow.

Harlan Daily Enterprise | Russell steps down as KC football coach

Former Mr. Football starred at Evarts

By Les Dixon - Corbin Times Tribune

KNOX CENTRAL — After spending six years as head coach of the Knox Central football program, Scottie Russell has decided to resign.

Russell, the 1991 Mr. Football from Evarts High School, confirmed his decision Friday after putting some serious thought into what he was going to do the past couple of days.

Russell’s final year as head coach at Knox Central turned out to be his most trying season. The Panthers were coming off a regional final appearance in 2015 and had high expectations for 2016 with a solid nucleus of players returning, but injuries to key players led to Knox Central finishing the season with its first losing record under Russell, along with losing four games in a row for the first time since 2004. The 4-6-1 record was also Knox Central’s first losing record since 2007 when the Panthers finished with a 4-6 mark.

“I’m stepping down, and it’s a very hard decision, but I really believe it’s the right decision,” Russell said. “I’m going to miss the relationships that I have built here with the players from this year and in the past as well. We’ve had a lot of good times during my six years as head coach here, and during my 13 years with the Knox Central program.

“This was a great experience here,” he added. “I mulled things over a bit, and just decided it’s time to go into a different direction. I’m going to take care of my family, and spend time with my family, and enjoy doing things with them. I’ve got a daughter that’s a junior on the softball team here and I have a daughter that’s a freshman that cheerleads.”

Russell posted a 44-25-1 record during his stay, which included six straight playoff appearances, two district championships, a regional final appearance and a 4-6 overall record in postseason play.

“We had a lot of success here, and I’ve built a lot of great friendships for life while being here,” Russell said. “Right now, I’m going to enjoy my time with my family, and take a step back and see what the future holds.”

Russell did say that he isn’t closing the door on coaching in the future.

“I’m leaving the door open,” he admitted. “Never say never. I don’t know whether it will be as a head coach, but it could be a position coach. It’s tough stepping away, but we’ve accomplished a lot while I was here and came a long way.”

Knox Central athletic director Jeff Canady said he appreciated Russell’s time at Knox Central.

“We want to wish the best for coach Russell in any future endeavors,” he said. “He has been a great influence on the players through the years. He was a heck of a guy and will be missed.”

Canady said he and some others will be getting together to see what direction the football program will go next.

“I will be discussing things over with the principal and superintendent, and we will come up with a game plan and then start a search for a coach,” he said.

Will be interesting to see who they replace him with.

Could Wayne Mills come back, or Bart Elam Pineville's coach who is a KC Alum?
